Updates 2017-02-14

Hi, Folks!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

It’s Patch Tuesday – and a weird one. Both Adobe and Microsoft have self-imposed delays on their staged updates this month. Instead of installing those updates anyway, I strongly suggest you wait for the “all clear” — there’s no telling just how serious the problems are until they are resolved. Installing them anyway could leave your device even less secure or potentially unbootable.

Everything else should be safe, though, so let’s get started. The typical computer should see roughly 800mb in updates today.

Apple released updates for iOS 10.2.1, macOS Update 10.12.3, Safari 10.0.3, GarageBand 10.1.6, watchOS 3.1.3, iTunes 12.5.5, iCloud for Windows 6.1.1, tvOS 10.1.1, Logic Pro X 10.3 and Security Update 2016-003 Supplemental. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

Google Chrome OS 56.0.2924.87 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 24.0.0.221 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Mac: http://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2016-10-11

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.5gb in updates today. It’s another big one. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, .NET, Silverlight, Office, and MSRT (~1.2gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

This month marks the beginning of a new Microsoft update policy of packaging updates in group rollups instead of individually for different applications, even for older supported operating systems like Windows 7 and 8.1. As of this month Microsoft will release all Windows-tied security patches in the same file each month, with a separate non-security update package and other minor updates for feature and compatibility fixes. What this means for you is that Windows will now impose security updates once they’ve passed limited testing, and will deal with the aftermath of inevitable failures after Patch Tuesday with additional rollups. Don’t get me wrong, the security updates are essential to good computing, but without the ability to selectively exclude known-bad updates after internal testing is performed, this is going to create a situation where most enterprise environments delay updates even longer. The only safe resolution for this is to have full backups and be prepared to perform a reset or system restore should, well, the inevitable disaster occur.

Apple released updates for macOS/OS X, Safari, iCloud for Windows, Windows Migration Assistant, and printer drivers. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 10.0.2 is the second security update to the new version of iOS 10 that was released last month. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version. It should be okay to install on your iOS device now, but be prepared for 10.0.3 anytime.

Google Chrome OS 53.0.2785.154 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 23.0.0.185 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Updates 2014-06-10

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday!

It’s been a month already, so if you haven’t changed all your passwords, please do it now. Then come back. I’ll still be here.

Microsoft released 7 updates for Windows, Office, and Internet Explorer. This includes security updates (~60mb). A reboot is required. Some of the vulnerabilities these updates resolve apply to Windows XP but will never be patched on that platform. Upgrade to Windows 7 NOW or switch to a new computer.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for Safari, OS X, Java, iTunes and MacBook Air SMC. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 14.0.0.125 is a security update.

Mac: http://12pd.com/click?airmac

Updates 2011-02-08

Hey folks!

Microsoft released a dozen updates today covering stability and security issues in Windows, Internet Explorer and MS Office. This includes security updates. A restart is required. Use Windows Update to obtain these updates.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Adobe released critical security updates today for Adobe Reader and Acrobat. Use the Help, Check for Updates function. A restart is required. If you don’t have the current major build of Adobe Reader, get it from:
  http://get.adobe.com/reader

Apple released iMovie 9.0.2, iDVD 7.1.1, and MacBook Air, which consists of primarily stability and compatibility updates. These are not security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current versions of all affected software.

Looking for an upgrade?

As many of you know, I do a lot of local PC and tech support. You wouldn’t believe how often people forget their passwords – or don’t remember how many accounts they have for a certain server. Over the last couple weeks I’ve seen people forgot they had both a personal and a business account at PayPal (and misplaced $2k in one of them), forgot their Gmail passwords (x3!), or suffered due to new and improved password requirements for one service or another that require more complex passwords than they’re used to using.

This is a trend that will only continue to get worse. Instead of relying on your mind to remember your many passwords (difficult!), using the same password everywhere (very insecure and doesn’t always work), and struggling to remember your account details…do yourself a favor and install RoboForm. It’s supported by most operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android and Linux – and in any scriptable browser (pretty much all current browsers). It encrypts and backs up your passwords, too, and helps you keep notes and other information about your accounts – like who your favorite musician was, your first pet and all that stuff so you don’t have to struggle to pay your phone bill just because you were having a “Cindi Lauper day” when you created the account. Hey, it happens to all of us.

Anyway…RoboForm is simply an amazing plugin that I don’t know how I would function without. We manage well over 200 websites with it, in addition to the many product and service websites we use as well. It’s secure, stable, and constantly improved. And you can share your accounts across as many devices as you want for only $10/year (called “RoboForm Everywhere”). Check it out:

iOS 4.2.1 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod corrects more than a hundred security and stability issues with previous versions, including several that enable a remote attacker to exploit your device without action on your part (for example, by simply calling you). This is not your typical Christmas season. 99% of the sales I’ve seen have been little more than something to lure you in the door for hardware that isn’t actually available, or isn’t something you should purchase. That said, there’s still time to replace your aging hardware online if you’re looking for:

My advice: Avoid Toshiba and Dell, make sure it’s at least a dual-core machine, and unless you’re a hardcore gamer or developer, you shouldn’t need to spend more than $600 for a machine that will last you 5+ years. Since Windows 7 has now been available for about a year, and has proven itself stable and reliable, if you were one of many putting off your upgrade due to fears of Vista, it’s all clear now. 🙂

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program — if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crap-ware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
