Updates 2010-06-08

Hey folks!

Microsoft released over a dozen updates today, addressing security issues affecting a mix of Windows, Windows Media Player, Office, Internet Explorer, Silverlight and SharePoint. You should visit Microsoft Update immediately to install those which apply to your computer. This does include security updates. A reboot is required.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates to Safari, Java, and Boot Camp. This includes security updates. Use the “Apple Updater” to get the most recent versions of all the affected software. A reboot is required.

Adobe released several security updates over the last week or so that include multiple security fixes. This includes Shockwave, Premiere, Bridge, PhotoShop, OnLocation, and Illustrator. This includes security updates. In affected client software (such as PhotoShop and Illustrator) use “Help, Check for updates” to upgrade to the most current version. For Shockwave, visit the following URL:
  http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/
As with all Adobe products, be sure to UNCHECK any toolbars, add-ons and other “offers” both during download and during installation.

Also be aware that there is a known security vulnerability in Flash that will be fixed “soon”. While Adobe acknowledges this to be a problem, the only current workaround is to uninstall Flash. This vulnerability is being targeted to infect computers with scareware (such as AVXP), so if you do get an unfamiliar popup saying that your security software needs updated, you’re probably *already* infected. Contact me right away. The longer these infections stay on, the worse they get.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
