Hi, Folks!
It’s Patch Tuesday! While not really a lot of updates today, they’re big. Most computers will require about 500mb of updates, and some will easily exceed 1gb in updates. Sigh.
Microsoft released 8 updates for Windows, Internet Explorer, MSRT, MSE, .Net, Silverlight, SharePoint and Office (>100mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Reader 11.0.05 is a security update. Use Help, Check for Updates to get the most current version.
While we’re on the subject of Adobe, Adobe’s source management system for Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat and ColdFusion was hacked. Since code re-use is very common within any code library, and Adobe products have a history of being one of the most frequently exploited in the world, this means any secure coding issues discovered will be tested against all Adobe products in order to get the best ‘bang for their buck.’ Ultimately this means there will likely be a large number of zero-day vulnerabilities in Adobe products (from Acrobat to AIR to Flash to Photoshop) over the next few months. If you don’t NEED a specific Adobe program on your computer in the near future, it would be in your best interest to remove it temporarily.
As if that’s not enough, their authentication platform for customer profiles was hacked, too. If Adobe *knows* your individual account was compromised they’ve already reset your password and notified you by email, but since they only recently discovered that any of it was hacked (again, really), it would be in your best interest to go ahead and change any Adobe-related passwords.
This goes for accounts you may have on their forum, bug reporting system, Adobe Cloud and profile manager. Your encrypted password and email address have been compromised, as well as any financial data associated with your account. If Adobe is using a global salt and the attackers have access to the passwords for some of the accounts (and you can be sure that they do), then decrypting all the account details is only a matter of time. Change your Adobe password NOW and change the passwords for any sites where you’ve used the same or similar passwords, especially email, banking and online bill payment services.
Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone or kindle – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.
Important Notes
Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.
Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.
It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.
Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:
