Updates 2016-07-19

Hi, Folks!

It’s not Patch Tuesday, but Apple, Oracle, Adobe, and more have released updates today. The typical computer should see approximately 25mb of updates. Let’s get started.

Apple released iOS 9.3.3 for iPhone 4s and later, iPod touch (5th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later. This is a security update. The easiest update is through OTA, or Over-The-Air update by connecting to Wi-Fi then going to Settings, General, Software Update, then tap “Download and Install” or “Install now”. The update will restart your device.

Apple released OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and Security Update 2016-004 for OS X Mavericks 10.9.5, OS X Yosemite v10.10.5, and OS X El Capitan 10.11 and later, iTunes 12.4.2, iCloud for Windows 5.2.1, Safari 9.1.2, tvOS 9.2.1 for Apple TV (4th generation), and watchOS 2.2.2 for Apple Watch. These are security updates. Use the Apple App Store to install the most current versions. If you have multiple devices you can save bandwidth by downloading the update from here:

Adobe Flash Player Active-X 22.0.0.210 is a security update. This version only applies to Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Java 8u101 is a security update. You’re better off removing Java than updating it unless you are absolutely sure you really use it. Java is no longer required for almost any website (Java and JavaScript are not the same thing!), and used for only a small fraction of desktop applications. When in doubt, remove it and re-install only if you find it is required. This is a security update.
