From microwave energy blasters and blinding laser beams to chemical agents and deafening sonic blasters, these weapons are at the cutting edge of crowd control.

The US is at the forefront of an international arms development effort that includes a remarkable assortment of technologies, which look and sound like they belong in a Hollywood science fiction thriller. From microwave energy blasters and blinding laser beams, to chemical agents and deafening sonic blasters, these weapons are at the cutting edge of crowd control. The Pentagon's approved term for these weapons is "non-lethal" or "less-lethal" and they are intended for use against the unarmed. Designed to control crowds, clear streets, subdue and restrain individuals and secure borders, they are the 21st century's version of the police baton, pepper spray and tear gas. As journalist Ando Arike puts it, "The result is what appears to be the first arms race in which the opponent is the general population." The demand for non-lethal weapons (NLW) is rooted in the rise of television. In the 1960s and '70s the medium let everyday Americans witness the violent tactics used to suppress the civil rights and anti-war movements.

More and more people use their smartphones to record police misconduct. But laws against wiretapping are being used to intimidate and stop them.

Over Memorial Day weekend this past May, residents of Miami Beach witnessed a horrific display of police brutality as 12 cops sprayed Raymond Herisse's car with 100 bullets, killing him. The shooting provoked outrage in the surrounding community, not only because of the murder, but because of what the police did afterward.

Amarillo Police Department has fired a school liaison officer, subsequently arrested on child sex charges. Donald Ray Sanders Jr., was arrested Tuesday on a warrant of sexual assault of a child, a Randall County news release said.

A complaint said Sanders sexually assaulted a female minor in July 2004 and admitted committing the offense to a Randall County officer during the investigation. On Sept. 14, APD Chief Robert Taylor received word Sanders was the subject of a criminal investigation conducted by the Randall County Sheriff's Office, police said, and Sanders was immediately placed on administrative leave. An internal APD investigation resulted in Sanders' termination on Monday, police said.

An Azle woman on Thursday filed a federal wrongful arrest lawsuit against the city of Estelline, its former police chief and a former officer, alleging they violated her Fourth Amendment rights during a traffic stop last year.

The suit names the city, former Police Chief Chris Jolly and former officer Jayson Fry as defendants and claims the arrest humiliated and embarrassed Laura Dutton, who was arrested on a money laundering charge Nov. 28 after a traffic stop in Estelline. The suit said Dutton was traveling from Azle to Amarillo to visit a friend when Fry pulled her over for a suspected speeding violation. Fry claimed he smelled marijuana in the vehicle and asked to search it, but Dutton refused.

Police in Anaheim take my "I've never been shot at while reporting on U.S. soil" virginity.

Police using less-lethal rounds fired on me while I was photographing an anti-police brutality protest in Anaheim, CA for my book. Protesters had gathered outside the Anaheim City Hall Tuesday night to protest police who shot and killed unarmed 25 year-old Manuel Diaz. Right before the incident, I was standing on a well-lit, main drag, with my camera clearly in hand and with another journalist, Tim Pool. After yelling "shit", I ducked for cover between two U-Haul trucks, where I remained for several minutes as projectiles whizzed by me on both sides.

It Is Time For A Meaningful Conversation on Reasonable Gun Laws

I hope that the post title at least captured the attention of my anti-gun readers, and keeps you reading.

Those of you who read this blog know my political views. I'm a socially liberal, fiscally conservative libertarian, although the pelt of my Wookie suit is not quite so full and glossy as some. I am a Christian who supports the rights of gays to marry. I am a southern white male redneck who believes minorities and women deserve equal treatment, but I also believe that quota systems like Affirmative Action are covert racism, fostering the notion that minorities cannot succeed on their own merits.

Obama executive actions seen as a threat to the Constitution

July 15, 2014

A prominent law professor and avowed supporter of the Obama White House will tell the House on Wednesday that the president has created one of the biggest constitutional crises in the country's history and will endorse House Republicans' effort to sue to rein him in. Jonathan Turley, a professor at George Washington University, will say President Obama is trampling the founders' vision for the country in his push to circumvent Congress, and he will demand Republicans and Democrats alike forget their party labels to unify against this White House's power grab.

americancityandcounty.com
August 16, 2005

A new nationwide study released by the nonpartisan Bay Area Center for Voting Research (BACVR) ranks the political leanings of every American city and finds that Detroit, Michigan is the most liberal and Provo, Utah the most conservative.

In all, the BACVR researchers examined voting patterns of 237 American cities with populations of over 100,000 and ranked them each on liberal and conservative scales. The list of Americas most liberal cities is dominated by cities with large African American populations that are concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and California. Conversely, the study found that the staunchest conservative cities are clustered in the South and interior West and have extremely low numbers of African American residents.
