BART takeover robbery: 40 to 60 teens swarm train, hold up riders

BART police are beefing up patrols at Oakland stations after dozens of juveniles terrorized riders Saturday night when they invaded the Coliseum Station and commandeered at least one train car, forcing passengers to hand over bags and cell phones.

The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday. Witnesses told police that 40 to 60 juveniles flooded the station, jumped the fare gates and rushed to the second-story train platform. Some of the robbers apparently held open the doors of a Dublin-bound train car while others streamed inside, confronting and robbing and in some cases beating riders.

The record-breaking heat that made 2016 the hottest year ever recorded has continued into 2017, pushing the world into "truly uncharted territory", according to the World Meteorological Organisation.

Global warming is largely being driven by emissions from human activities, but a strong El Niño - a natural climate cycle - added to the heat in 2016. The El Niño is now waning, but the extremes continue to be seen, with temperature records tumbling in the US in February and polar heatwaves pushing ice cover to new lows.

If you've ever been visited by Child Protective Services, you know just how stressful and distressing it can feel. Even the best of parents can get frazzled when someone with the legal authority to take aware their kids is present.

Unfortunately, unless your civil rights are violated, you likely won't have any legal claim against Child Protective Services stemming from the agency's, or its representatives', routine actions. So, you likely won't be able to sue for emotional distress. However, when civil rights are violated, individuals can sue CPS, and these claims can be costly for cities.

A few months ago I wrote about how you can encrypt your entire life in less than an hour. Well, all the security in the world can't save you if someone has physical possession of your phone or laptop...

On his way through the airport, Customs and Border Patrol agents pulled him aside. They searched him, then detained him in a room with a bunch of other people sleeping in cots. They eventually returned and said they'd release him if he told them the password to unlock his phone. Bikkannavar explained that the phone belonged to NASA and had sensitive information on it, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.

No fewer than 70 percent of internet-connected Seagate NAS hard drives have been compromised by a single malware program. That's a pretty startling figure. Security vendor Sophos says the bitcoin-mining malware Miner-C is the culprit.

I'm surprised this story hasn't garnered more attention. Perhaps it's because we're talking only 7,000 hard drives possibly in total, or perhaps it's because the mainstream media doesn't understand what NAS means. Either way, it has colossal implications. Apparently, storage admins:

Japan alone has reported more than 300 ransomware attacks on smart TVs this year, marking a sharp increase in cyberattacks targeting internet of things (IoT) appliances, according to Trend Micro. Most smartphones can respond to your voice commands, but they might also respond to someone else's. Researchers from France's ANSSI information security agency has found a way to make Apple's Siri and Google voice search respond to commands.

With the voice commands listening, the radio waves can continue feeding signals into the mic that look to the phone like voice input. The researchers were able to use their system - based on an inexpensive open-source software GNU Radio, a USRP software-defined radio, an amplifier, and an antenna - to issue commands that sent the phone's browser to a specific website or placed a call.

"As the element is decaying it is throwing off radiation, and the radiation, if it hits the DNA in the nucleolus and the nucleus of a cell, can alter that DNA in ways that can produce things like cancer," Hartmann said. "Now it can also cause simply the cell to die or it can mutate the cell in all kinds of other weird ways, and so it's kind of a numbers game. If you irradiate a million cells... you might get two or three that become cancerous. That's all it takes, right? You've got cancer," Hartmann continued in his video report. "The cesium could cause no cancer, or it could cause cancer in the first cell it irradiates. To say that there is a safe level of radiation is frankly wrong. It's just wrong."

The rainy deluge that hit the Mother Lode this weekend dropped 3 to 8 inches of rain over a 72 hour period, and meteorologists at the National Weather Service say another storm is on its way.

The next storm is expected to drop 2.5 to 3 inches of rain on the Sonora area, which will be less because warm air has the capability to hold more moisture than cold air. Snow levels will continue to be high as elevation increases, with Twain Harte expected to get 3 to 4 inches of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday. It will not snow in Sonora, Del Valle said. The strongest winds will be confined to the valley, reaching 40 to 60 miles per hour, with wind speeds around 35 to 40 miles per hour in the Sonora area. Mountain ridge top gusts will reach 50 to 70 mph.
