"My Hard Drive Crashed..." (and What I Learned From It)
Smashing Magazine
by Ben Gremillion
December 28, 2012

The most valuable part of a computer is also its most fragile: Data are the wealth of a digital lifestyle, a currency of which many notes are irreplaceable.

At least, that's how I felt staring at a "Confirm you want to wipe your hard disk" message, my finger poised over the mouse. During an emergency is a bad time to plan for one. It's the feeling one might get jumping from a plane before checking one's parachute. That's one experience I'd rather avoid, but it happened. Not the skydiving part. My OS was dying, and I wasn't prepared.

"No Drama Obama" again "can't wait" to pass a payroll tax cut extension

Payroll tax extension, how do I hate thee? Let me count the ways.

Why do politicians continue to debate this patently poor policy as though it represents the pinnacle of politically savvy middle-class tax cuts? It's not even technically a tax cut - just a premature borrowing from our own retirement safety net, which happens to be in dire straits anyway.

"One Nation Under Allah"... Students Recite Pledge of Allegiance in Arabic

Well now, here is evidence of what I've been saying all along and that is that you cannot be religiously neutral. It just can't happen.

Religion is at our very core and if we will not honor the true and living God as God, then we will fill that vacuum with a false god. Exhibit A: Rocky Mountain High School in Colorado. Outrage is building over the fact that students were encouraged to recite the Pledge of Allegiance over the loudspeaker in Arabic replacing "one nation under God" with "one nation under Allah." The school's principal, Tom Lopez, is standing by his decision to allow the pledge after receiving a flood of complaints from parents outraged over the incident. He claims to not be pushing an Islamic agenda.

"Opposite of America" is full of lies

If you waste much time on Facebook, you've probably stumbled upon at least one of the memes I address in this article.

If you waste much time on Facebook, you've probably stumbled upon at least one of the memes I address in this article. The style of the meme is to take individuals, have them explain how their country is able to accomplish some national goal, then state that it's the "opposite of what America does." None of the quotes are real, and indeed the Facebook page that creates them acknowledged this: "the Opposite of America memes were created by US Uncut and have reached 30 million people. The reason you know the quotes are fake is because the series is so popular-it's not too different than the Onion. We aren't trying to fool anyone and we don't use fake quotes on anything else."

Three are dead. Seven are wounded, some in critical condition. Keep the victims and their families in your prayers.

His friends and colleagues can't believe their "peaceful" community activist friend would do such a thing.

"Plenty of Waste, Big and Small", Nick Gillespie in the New York Times

October 13, 2013

On Tuesday, October 8, I participated in a New York Times debate about the effects of the government shutdown and budget sequestration.

"What federal spending are we better off without?" asked the Times of analysts from the left, right, and libertarian parts of the ideological spectrum. "What have we learned, seven months into sequestration and one week into a government shutdown?" Here's my answer...

"Privacy is a way of managing information flow."

Why are people so willing to give away their personal information to complete strangers?

It's because humans want to share information. And in fact, they share information a lot more freely than other "things" such as goods and services. Which of these are you most likely to provide without thinking much about it?...

"Ransomware" on SourceForge project sites

You may have seen an article yesterday about "ransomware" on SourceForge and Github websites.

The exploit in question leads victims to fake sites, where their PCs are then infected with the offending malicious ransomware. First, we would like to state that no malware in this instance was hosted on SourceForge, but rather the content on SourceForge linked to malware hosted off-site. We wanted to also assure you that within minutes of becoming aware of the problem, our team here at SourceForge, had removed the offending content and blocked the addresses from which it was being created. Likewise, it's apparent that our peers at Github took similar actions to address the problem.
