Updates 2023-08-08

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for August, 2023.

This month brings a whole bucket of ugly, and a reminder that fixing a bug is not the same thing as fixing the software. Every common browser released at least a security update each week for the last month, with Firefox maxing out sanity tests by releasing five (5) security updates in a mere ten (10) days. I warned about this years ago.

There were over 160 major hacks (some involving millions of users and thousands of organizations, one involving billions of users, Microsoft’s own security keys), and over 200 application updates this month. It’s a huge month, with about 4 GB of updates for most users.

This Month in Technology

Acupuncture and Integrative Solutions Incorporated, All-In-One Security, Allegheny County, AlphaPo, AMD Zen CPUs, AMD Zen2 CPUs, AMI MegaRAC Baseboard Management Controller (BMC), Argentina’s Comprehensive Medical Care Program, PathGroup Health Plan, Barracuda ESG, Batesville Tool & Die, Inc., Baylor College of Medicine, BAZAN Group, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery, Bi-Bett Corporation, BookCrossing, Buckingham County Public Schools, Buffalo State, California Public Employee and Retirement System (CalPERS), Call of Duty, Canon printers, CardioComm Solutions Inc, Care N’ Care Insurance Company, Inc., Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), Charles George Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Cisco SD-WAN vManage, Citrix Netscaler ADC and Gateway serversCloudzy, CoinsPaid, ColdFusion (several times),  Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE), Colorado State University (CSU), Comdirect, Commerzbank, Conic Finance, almost all CPUs, CraftRise, Curve Finance, Deutsche Bank AG, air-gapped systems in Eastern Europe, Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, Era Lend, Estée Lauder (twice!), European diplomats, Evotec, Exchange Online, EY Law, Fairfax Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Family Vision of Anderson, P.A., Fortinet SSL VPNs, FortiOS and FortiProxy, Gary Motykie, M.D., Ghostscript, Google Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), Google Cloud Build, Harkins Pain & Sleep Management Group, Harris Health System, Hawai’i Community College, Helix, Henry Ford Health, Highland Health Systems, Hillsborough County, Hines Interests Limited Partnership, Hot Topic, Howard County General Hospital, Immigration Directorate General in Indonesia, ING, Italian government, Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile/Mobileiron — an unknown number of devices are effected, likely in the millions (and again, and again), IVF Michigan, P.C., Johns Hopkins Health System Corporation, JumpCloud, Kenya’s e-Citizen, LeetSwap, LetMeSpy, Life Management Center of Northwest Florida, Inc., Locally, MagicDuel, Majorel, Maximus Federal Services, Inc,  Microsoft, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Exchange, MikroTik RouterOS routers, Military and Police “Secure” Radio systems, Minecraft servers, MobiMed ePR, Molina Healthcare, Mondee, at least 545 servers/organizations running MOVEit software, Multichain, National Student Clearinghouse (3,500 colleges and universities97% of postsecondary enrollment in the US), NATO (yes, that NATO), New England Life Care, Inc., 12 Norwegian Ministries, Norwegian Government Security and Service Organisation (DSS), NPO Mashinostroyeniya, OpenAI, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, Ortivus, Outlook.com, PaperCut NG/MF, Paramedic Billing Services, Park Royal Hospital, Pension Benefit Information, Performance Health Technology (PH Tech), Physicians Insurance, Poly Network, Postbank, Prospect Medical Holdings, Quinn Emanuel, Razer, Redis, Rite Aid Corporation, Roblox, Roblox Developer Conference, Rockstar Games Inc., Rockwell Automation ControlLogix, Rodeo Finance, Saint Francis Health System, Salesforce, Serco Inc., several hospitals, Shutterfly, 70,000 small office/home office (SOHO) routers, SonicWall, South Central Ambulance Service, South Western Ambulance Service, Southern Association of Independent Schools, Sutter Senior Care, Tampa General Hospital, Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America, Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA), Tesla, The Chattanooga Heart Institute, The Health Plan of West Virginia, Inc., Tigo, TLScontact, Tomra, Uber Technologies Inc, Ubuntu OverlayFS, UEFI boot loader security, UK Electoral Commission, Ukrainian and Polish businesses, Unified Pain Management, US Ambassador to China, US Department of Commerce (and at least two dozen other US government agencies), UT Southwestern Medical Center, Vermillion, VirusTotal, VMware ESXi, VMware Tanzu Application Service, Wake Family Eye Care, WooCommerce Payments, WordPress Ninja Forms, Wuhan Earthquake Monitoring Center, Yamaha, Zimbra (twice), and Zyxel firewalls have reportedly been hacked or compromised this month.

In light of all that, Barracuda Networks asserts that fewer than 100 scammers are responsible for global email extortion campaigns, leading to record breaches. There is yet another means of exfiltrating user information and passwords – this time from the sound your keyboard makes as you type.

BAZAN Group, Microsoft Exchange Online, Microsoft Sharepoint, Reddit, Slack, Spotify, and WhatsApp have suffered from outages this month.

Last months updates broke display and audio hardware, Outlook for Desktop saving, Outlook hyperlinks, websites in Safari, Screen Time on iOS, video recording and playback, certain VPNs, and Windows Update. I am also seeing reports from dozens of my clients that the iOS and iPadOS updates released last week are triggering alerts about “new devices” connecting to users’ Apple accounts. In all cases it was triggered shortly after a restart of a device that had received the OTA update.

Google is *really* pushing Enhanced Safe Browsing, the feature that allows them to monitor all activity on your devices, including third-party apps and websites in other browsers, even when you tell them no. Google announced they will be making it easier to remove personal information and explicit images from Google Search. Google is pushing WEI, though, which will make it impossible to enforce security and privacy in your own browser. As an example, your local Taco Bell could refuse to show you their address on their own website – or even load at all – unless you enable their ability to access your precise location, microphone and camera. This isn’t just my paranoia, it’s a standard Google is pushing at this very moment.

IBM’s Red Hat has announced that they will change the way they “comply” with the GPLv2 open source requirements, limiting access to some of their source. Oracle (yes, that Oracle!) is actually pointing out the insanity of this move.

Amazon is raising prices on some IPv4 addresses.

Clop ransomware is now using bittorrent to bypass takedowns. Cloudflare, primarily known for their security and privacy features, is being abused to aid malware.

The SEC is now mandating that publicly traded companies disclose attacks in four business days after discovery. The Australian government isn’t sure if the Privacy Act applies to their own actions when they violate citizen’s trust or privacy.

Microsoft is going to be forcing users of the native Windows Mail and Calendar applications to the “new Outlook” starting this month. Don’t do it!

Now for the good news:

The FBI finally found out which evil organization purchased malicious spyware after the US banned it: the FBI itself!

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday is huge this month. The typical computer should see roughly 4 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to address 88 vulnerabilities in .NET Core, .NET Framework, ASP.NET, Azure Arc, Azure DevOps, Azure HDInsights, Dynamics Business Central Control, Memory Integrity System Readiness Scan Tool, Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based), Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Excel, Microsoft Office Outlook, Microsoft Office SharePoint, Microsoft Office Visio, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft WDAC OLE DB provider for SQL, Microsoft Windows Codecs Library, Reliability Analysis Metrics Calculation Engine, SQL Server, Tablet Windows User Interface, Visual Studio, Windows Bluetooth A2DP driver, Windows Cloud Files Mini Filter Driver, Windows Common Log File System Driver, Windows Cryptographic Services, Windows Defender, Windows Fax and Scan Service, Windows Group Policy, Windows HTML Platform, Windows Hyper-V, Windows Kernel, Windows LDAP – Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, Windows Message Queuing, Windows Mobile Device Management, Windows Projected File System, Windows Reliability Analysis Metrics Calculation Engine, Windows Smart Card, Windows System Assessment Tool, Windows Wireless Wide Area Network Service, and MSRT (~ 2 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Ventura 13.5, macOS Monterey 12.6.8, macOS Big Sur 11.7.9, Safari 16.6, iOS 15.7.8, iOS 16.6, iPadOS 15.7.8, iPadOS 16.6, tvOS 16.6, watchOS 9.6, and Pro Video Formats 2.2.6. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 15.7.8 and 16.6 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

iPadOS 15.7.8 and 16.6 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 9.6 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 16.6 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 108.0.5359.239 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The release of macOS Ventura (13.x) means that macOS Catalina (10.15) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Big Sur (11) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current — and final — release of the Windows 10 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. All non-LTS versions of Windows 10 other than v22H2 are now out of support, upgrade to v22H2 now. If you aren’t sure whether you are using LTS, you aren’t. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

The now-current release of the Windows 11 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 11 pushes you to get the latest Windows 11 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 24 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Windows 11 is now stable and can be upgraded to if your hardware supports it, but I recommend you continue to use Windows 10 until early 2025 before you consider switching to it.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need or use, reducing the attack surface. This includes “free” applications like Avast, OpenOffice, and games you do not actually play.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2023-02-14

Happy Valentine’s Day, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for February, 2023.

There are a whopping 150+ major hacks and 200+ application updates this month. It’s a big one, with about 6 GB of updates for most users. Microsoft is also pushing out Windows 22H2 (Win10 and Win11) for all supported devices. If you’re not already on the latest builds, expect to be “upgraded” automatically in the coming days.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Big Sur 11.7.3, macOS Monterey 12.6.3, macOS Ventura 13.2.1, iOS 12.5.7, iOS 15.7.3, iOS 16.3.1, iPadOS 15.7.3, iPadOS 16.3.1, Safari 16.3.1, tvOS 16.3.2 and watchOS 9.3.1.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 18 months.

Windows 11 is still very young so I encourage you to wait a few more months before you consider switching to it.

Updates 2022-07-12

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for July, 2022. You know how you say something like “biggest update series in well over a year” and the next month just blows that out of the water? We’re there now.

This Month in Technology

Advocates, Inc., Aerojet Rocketdyne, Alabama Eye & Cataract, P.C., Alameda Health System, Aloha Laser Vision, Amagasaki, Japan, Amazon Photos, AMD, Anker Eufy, Aon, Aruba Networks Switches, ATC Healthcare, Bangladeshi government, Bank of the West, Baptist Medical Center and Resolute Health Hospital, Bayhealth Medical Center, Inc., BeanVPN, Benefit Plan Administrators, Inc., Bookchor, Bourse des Vols, Capital Economics, Carnival Corporation, Carolina Behavioral Health Alliance, Carolina Eyecare Physicians, LLC, Catholic Health System, Center for Sight, Inc., Central Florida Inpatient Medicine, Charlotte Radiology, Cherry Creek Eye Physicians and Surgeons, P.C., CHRISTUS Spohn Health System Corporation, Cisco Secure Email, Cisco VPN routers, Citrix Application Delivery Management, CoDeSys Automation Software, Community of Hope D.C., Crema Finance, Customer.io, Disneyland’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, DivX SubTitles, Django, DTEK Group, ExpressLRS, Fast Shop, Flagstar Bank, Florida Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Association, Foxhall Ob Gyn Associates, Geographic Solutions, Gol Tours LTD, Grab, Harmony, Hillrom Medical, Honda cars, Hudson Regional Hospital, IBM, Ignitis Group, Indian Flood Monitors, Indian government, thousands of industrial devices, Israeli Defense, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington, Kaiser Permanente, Kernersville Eye Surgeons, P.C., Khouzestan Steel Company, almost a million Kubernetes clusters, La Poste Mobile, Latvian government, Lithuanian government, Long Vision Center, Macmillan Publishing, Mangatoon, Marriott International, Massachusetts Child and Family Services, Inc., Mattax Neu Prater Eye Center, Inc., MCG Health and Eye Care Leaders, Medical University of Innsbruck, MEGA, Michigan Avenue Immediate Care, Microsoft Azure FabricScape, Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Windows Domain Servers, Mitel VoIP, New Jersey Health Information Management, Nichirin-Flex U.S.A., North American Spine Society, Norway govt sites, OpenSea, OrthoNebraska, Phelps Care Regional Medical Center, Preferred Hospital Leasing Coleman Inc., Professional Finance Company, Renton School District, Resolute Health Hospital, Rodeo Pharmacy Inc, Shanghai National Police, Sharper Vision P.A., SHI International, Shoprite, Sight Partners Physicians, P.C., Sophos Firewall, Southwest Health Center, St Joseph Heritage Health, Stanford University, Stokes Regional Eye Centers, TB Kawashima, The People Concern, The Vicksburg Clinic, LLC, Tosoh America, Inc., UK Army’s Twitter & YouTube, UNC Lenoir Health Care, University of Pisa, University Pediatric Dentistry, US Bank, Walmart, WellDyneRx, LLC, Wiltshire Farm Foods, Yodel, Yuma Regional Medical Center, and Zimbra reportedly been hacked or compromised this month.

Some vendors, like CafePress, simply don’t care about security – and do their best to conceal when they’re hacked. I contacted them to report when they were hacked back in 2014 and they ignored me. Sigh.

Microsoft 365, Cloudflare, Microsoft Teams, Rogers (it was a big one), and Microsoft Office / OneDrive had widespread outages.

Facebook is collecting the patient data of millions, and is also blocking the link to the Facebook settlement class action website. You think they would have learned.

Attackers are using Google Chrome Extension fingerprinting to uniquely identify you. This method works in any Chromium browser.

Spam is still the #1 method of exploiting users. Whether it is a fake renewal notice, fake copyright complaints, or fake invoice, most spams will include a fake login form or a fake support number. In both cases they depend on the user to actually enter the login details or call the scammer to fall prey to their attacks. Online development environments are even being used for these attacks.

Counterfeit hardware can be far more dangerous than the real thing. Even though some vendors only support their hardware a few years before you have to replace it,  counterfeits are never supported and often have malicious implants.

Microsoft has rolled back (temporarily) their decision to block macros by default.

MITRE staff didn’t understand that publishing vulnerable sites, not just vulnerability information was bad, while a HackerOne employee was selling exploits before they were published, and an Amazon employee installed cryptominers on Capital One servers. Adobe is using malware traits to block antivirus software from scanning PDF files. How quickly these organizations can shatter their trust.

Here’s a great example of how a single vulnerability will be used to get far deeper into your network and hardware.

Storing your password directly in the browser is dangerous. Use a password manager.

Now for the good news:

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday is huge this month. The typical computer should see roughly 3 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to address 74 vulnerabilities in Azure Site Recovery, Azure Storage Library, DNS Server, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Lync, Microsoft Office, Open Source Software, Skype for Business, Windows Active Directory, Windows Advanced Local Procedure Call, Windows BitLocker, Windows Boot Manager, Windows Client/Server Runtime Subsystem, Windows Connected Devices Platform Service, Windows Credential Guard, Windows Fast FAT Driver, Windows Fax and Scan Service, Windows Fax Service, Windows Group Policy, Windows Hyper-V, Windows IIS, Windows Kernel, Windows Media, Windows Network File System, Windows Performance Counters, Windows Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, Windows Portable Device Enumerator Service, Windows Print Spooler Components, Windows Remote Procedure Call Runtime, Windows Security Account Manager, Windows Server Service, Windows Shell, Windows Storage, XBox, and MSRT (~3 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Google Chrome OS 103.0.5060.114 is a security update.

The release of macOS Monterey (12.x) means that macOS Mojave (10.14) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Catalina (10.15) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (v21H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 18 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

The now-current release of the Windows 11 (v21H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections.

Windows 11 is still very young so I encourage you to wait a few more months before you consider switching to it.

Updates 2021-07-13

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for July, 2021. Bad patches, bad faith, insufferable heat, and a horrific series of holiday events for security professionals has left me in a foul mood. I’ll try to keep my temper.

This Month in Technology

Apex LegendsATMs and PoS platformsBoeingCisco Smart Switchestens of millions of Dell devicesEA (including the source code for dozens of games), IndexsinasiOS activation lock, the IRSKaseya – impacting hundreds of companies and over a million devices, and then, another Linux kernel bugLumaNSW Dept of EducationPlingSolarWinds (again), Southwest AirlinesSwedish Coop supermarkets, VMWare vCenter, Western Digital’s My Book Live devices, and Windows Print Spooler (printnightmare) have been hacked.

Malware was released posing as a Kaseya security update to address their 4th of July horror show, Microsoft signed and published the malware-laden Netfilter rootkit, the Accelion breach keeps getting worse, there’s another strain of ransomware targeting Microsoft Exchange, and 8.4 billion passwords were dumped in a new leak. There has been a 10x increase in businesses targeted by adult phishing messages.

Apple prioritized its own app before competitors in their “fair” app search engine, simply naming a wireless network a certain way can disable iPhone Wi-Fi on devices that connect to it. If it’s an open network, they’ll try to connect to it automatically. Safari broke indexedDB which broke access to almost every web app. Apple uses slave labor while refusing to hire minorities, Siri is still violating your privacy, and if your iPhone is the “key” to your bank or other sensitive information, get a better lock. At least the Woz supports the right-to-repair.

You’re not in charge of your SMART devices. Dell admits to intentionally disabling their hardware. An Australian phone carrier is injecting advertisements into texts. What this says about your use of two-factor authentication (2FA) is that at the very least, your carrier can always access them (and so can any 3-letter agencies). Google has even acknowledged the significance of this risk and is advising developers to stop using texts for 2FA.

Microsoft’s Linux reposMicrosoft Store, and Fastly had major outages. The Fastly CDN outage was caused by “one customer changing a setting.

Microsoft announced the upcoming release of Windows 11, which has only a handful of significant changes (including an uglier user interface and a requirement for home users to use a Microsoft account). This article is a great summary of why forcing a Microsoft account on their users is a bad idea.

If having the Facebook app itself installed weren’t risky enough…they can analyze the photo of a single word to recreate your handwriting, and identify the source of deepfakes, but they can’t bother to follow their own “important rules.” Facebook can be held liable for their facilitation of sex trafficking.

Secretaries of State continue to promote the false “secure election” claims when they, themselves, hold evidence to the contrary. There is now sufficient evidence to demonstrate that election fraud was the norm in 2020. Dominion blames “human error,” and why wouldn’t they? Liberty dies in darkness.

Epic Games is winning appeal in Australia. Robinhood violated the law by getting in bed with Wall Street, and the SEC is targeting independent investors. SpaceX is being investigated for their Starlink expansion (the heat is on). A federal judge has overturned California firearm ban even while California launches a vaccine passport. The Linux Foundation has jumped the shark, by joining the fracas.

The CDC keeps fudging the VAERS numbers so is it any wonder there are bills to ban a federal vaccination database? Why wouldn’t they when there are over 50,000 dead Americans thanks to the CV19 “vaccines,” and the vast majority of “COVID deaths” are to the vaccinated minority? More than half of all (government-funded) COVID “relief” was either stolen or fraudulent. Airlines are banning those who have received the vaccines and Pakistan is banning those who have not from having cell phones. Fauci keeps lying his way around the media, but that’s common when government meets health careProfit-driven labsagenda-driven judges, fake peer reviewand “science” (not to be confused with actual science) have produced defective (unless their intent is to kill) and ineffective vaccines, deadly mask mandates, and insane stay-at-home orders, that have caused irreparable damageJust say no“Voluntary” does not mean “without consent.”

Biden (falsely, in case you weren’t aware) believes “a number of officers” lost their lives during the January 6th “riot“, but is allowing actual murderers go free, even though the capitol staff allowed protesters to enter the magnetically locked doors. This is why Speaker Pelosi refused National Guard assistance. If they were there, their cronies couldn’t have staged this “mostly peaceful” false flag.

The US federal government is researching ways to implement their own version of a social credit system. NCLB=>CRT, and now they’re treating humor as racism. Thanks to interventionalism, gas is going to get much more expensive.

All terrorism is sponsored by the FBI, or concealed by them. That’s not an exaggeration. Anyone that’s turned on a TV knows that there are a lot of pedophiles in government. How many do you think are in the FBI?

Threatening to nuke your citizenry approaches the worst thing any President has ever done. When is revolution justified?

Now for the good news:

This heat wave is finally subsiding.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday this month is very large. The typical computer should see roughly 2.5 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Before I begin I should point out that Microsoft released an out-of-band (OOB) security update last week. For the vast majority of users, the “fix” caused more damage than the risk of compromise. Printers, card readers, even disk drives, suffered problems after installing the update, and in some cases Windows was broken as a result. Instead of tying it to the previously (and well-tested) June patch cycle update, they released the OOB update based on the beta version of the July update. I spent most of this week dealing with the fallout from this very poorly tested patch. Grrr.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Edge, .NET, Servicing Stack, Internet Explorer, and MSRT (~1.2 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for iOS 12.5.4 and iMovie 10.2.4. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 12.5.4 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

Google Chrome OS 91.0.4472.147 is a security update.

The release of macOS Big Sur (11.x) means that macOS High Sierra (10.13) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Mojave (10.14) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (v21H1) is very large, for the first time it’s actually smaller than the previous release, but it will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months and only supports any consumer builds for 18 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Updates 2020-07-14

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for July 2020.

This Month in Technology

Apple has formally announced that they’ll be switching to ARM processors on their new hardware. While Apple asserts that “most apps will just work,” the truth is that if it’s not a 64-bit app or it hasn’t been updated in more than a year, chances are not only won’t work on ARM but will never work on ARM. If you were here when they switched from PowerPC to Intel you remember the issues were long and wide. You’ll likely need a VM to make many of your apps work.

Piracy doesn’t pay, except for those creating the pirated apps.

Macs are still getting infected through fake “Flash update” malware, even on Catalina. From the comments, “Which is worse, a real Flash installer or a fake one? It’s a toss-up.”

Microsoft was caught breaching user trust, again, by hijacking your data from other browsers and importing into their forced update to their new Edge browser without your permission.

Mozilla switched to a 4-week cadence for major updates in March. This has resulted in even less time for beta testing and the expected release+1 security updates.

Google Chrome is planning to hide everything in a URL other than the domain name. Google, the most popular purveyor of information and also the self-appointed gatekeeper to what is true and false, believes that having the complete URL is bad for you.

Google resolved a major email spoofing vulnerability through customer services, shortly before allowing a core domain name for their Blogger service to expire.

Slack vulnerability allowed hackers to distribute malware to victims devices.

What is it going to take before you stop copying passwords on your phone?

Everyone knows Facebook is always listening. Now the courts have finally considered their web widgets “Wiretaps.” Others are, too. They’re also designing systems to be able to trigger recording of all background noise from external queues. In states like California, Facebook is already violating the all-party consent requirements by recording audio 24/7. Maybe they’ll eventually acknowledge that it’s bad and stop? Ouch. Sorry, I hurt myself laughing there. Oh, and the Facebook Messenger app allowed you to be infected with persistent malware. If you have a website with Facebook integration, you need to take action now to comply with the CCPA.

Airlines are perfectly happy to violate the Americans with Disabilities Act – and treat you like a terrorist – if you have medical conditions.

Bitdefender Antivirus allowed any website you visited to run code on your device. Apache’s Guacamole remote support client allows attackers to take over the entire enterprise. Backdoors in operating systems, why not backdoors in encryption software?

Surprise: phishing still works. Even by text. …and launching a service that relays content to third-parties will ensure it is abused. Honeypots (systems designed to be opened for abuse to see how attacks take place) demonstrate four previously unknown zero-day vulnerabilities.

Nintendo, Plex, Honda, Samsung, Oxford University, University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center, UCSF, anyone banking with various Chinese banks, Night Lion Security, 79 different Netgear router models, hundreds of online retailers, and it won’t be long before IoT vulnerabilities can be used to provide big game hunting for rare species.

June Patch Tuesday updates from Microsoft broke Outlook and other apps for some users.

Selective enforcement means you’re a publisher, says AG Barr of Section 230 of the CDA. There’s no better way to prevent the abuse of Section 230 to censor voices you disagree with.

Now for the good news:

Starlink is coming. LEO internet access could provide up to 1 Gbps Internet access from space. Testing will begin in the next weeks and will gradually move south as satellites take place.

For now, you can cut your internet bill by taking advantage of the free Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots through the end of the year.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday this month is huge. The typical computer should see roughly 1.5 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Edge, .NET, Internet Explorer, DNS Server, Office, Servicing Stack, and MSRT (~900 MB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.403 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Google Chrome OS 83.0.4103.119 is a security update.

The release of macOS Catalina (10.15) means that macOS Sierra (10.12) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS High Sierra (10.13) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (2004) is a huge (about 25% larger than any prior build) so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.
