Sick and tired? I am!

I’ve been really sick for the last week or so, and pretty much unable to function at anything important. What do you do when you’re sick? I sleep most of the day, check my email and server statuses irregularly, and play a game on my iPhone. What game? TowerMadness. Dude, this game is awesome. And today (well, for the next hour and a half), it’s free. More here:

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Updates 2010-02-24

Hey folks!

Microsoft has released out-of-cycle updates: between four and six of them depending on your version of Windows: one for native scripting for a newly released standard, one for time-zone compatability, service packs for .NET Frameworks 2 and 3, and reliability changes to Windows Activation core files. On Windows 7 platforms, the last of these is UNCHECKED by default, but very necessary: the current spate of rogueware does corrupt the Windows and Office licensing files, which is directly responsible for some machines not booting correctly after this months’ Patch Tuesday series. A reboot is required. You should visit Microsoft Update immediately to install them.

Updates 2009-10-17

Hey folks!

Adobe Reader 9.2, a major security update, was released on Tuesday. The update file, if you use Help, Check for Updates, is 40mb. The “full” installation package downloaded from Adobe’s website is only 27mb. Curiously, if you have DEP enabled on your Windows-based computer (the same thing that mitigates certain Adobe Reader-based vulnerabilities), you’re not able to download the Adobe Reader 9.2 installer from the Adobe website. Sigh. If you have not done so yet, update immediately:
  http://get.adobe.com/reader/
  Help, Check for Updates…

Since Tuesday, Apple has released iMovie 8.0.5 and two stability patches for OS X which correct what Apple describes as “intermittent hard drive-related stalls.” Since a stall could be responsible for data loss or other reliability issues, I recommend installing these updates immediately if you’re running OS X.

Security & utilities:
Most people only require one or two of the following applications.

A major update to AVG, AVG Free Edition 9.0.686, was released this morning. In addition to broader detections, it claims faster scanning and support for Windows 7. Support for AVG 8.5 will be discontinued in only two months or so, if the 8.0 to 8.5 update serves as any example, so if you’re running AVG, you should update as soon as possible. Installation will require at least one reboot, possibly two.

Ad-Aware 2009 8.1.0.0 and SuperAntiSpyware 4.29.1004 were released this week. These are both minor updates increasing the scope of detection, and should be considered non-urgent updates.
  http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php
  http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

GPU-Z 0.3.6 was released this week as well. GPU-Z is a video-card analysis tool, which enables you to quickly determine the type and version of your video card.

Media updates:

CDBurnerXP 4.2.6.1748 was released this week. It corrects a couple non-critical bugs, simplifies installation and adds cleaner templates for cover printing. This is not a security update.
  http://cdburnerxp.se/en/download

Google SketchUp 7.1.4871 is the first major update to the 7 branch, with better support for large models and more intuitive freehand, textures, grid and snap-to functionality. This is not a security update.
