Updates 2020-09-08

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for September 2020.

This Month in Technology

I enjoy the soapbox I’ve taken here in my newsletters over the years, but unfortunately we were struck by a PG&E “Public Safety Power Shutoff” event so lost more than a day this week for Patch Tuesday and haven’t had the time (or Internet access!) to be able to collect this information for this newsletter. ๐Ÿ™

Now for the good news:

Adobe Flash will be dead in only 113 days.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday this month is huge. The typical computer should see roughly 2 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Edge, .NET, Internet Explorer, Office, Servicing Stack, and MSRT (~1.5 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released an update for Pro Video Formats 2.1.2. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.414 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Google Chrome OS 85.0.4183.84 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The release of macOS Catalina (10.15) means that macOS Sierra (10.12) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS High Sierra (10.13) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (2004) is a huge (about 25% larger than any prior build) so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need or use, reducing the attack surface.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2020-04-14

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is the real Patch Tuesday for April 2020.

The next build of Windows 10 is just around the corner. If you don’t want to be the guinea pig I strongly suggest you update to v1909 as soon as possible if you’re running an older build. This will grant you a reprieve from the new version for a couple months. Let everyone else beta test and you can upgrade when they’ve worked out the bugs.

This Month in Technology

France content publishers have won a tiny victory against Google. The French competition authority now requires Google (and presumably other news publishers) to pay for republication rights when including a snippet of content. Google simply removed the snippet and now publishes only the title and URL.

A scale 10.0 vulnerability in VMWare has placed most corporate and cloud offerings at severe risk of data compromise.

The latest build of the Switch operating system now lets you move downloaded games to an SD card and remap buttons.

Mozilla’s new privacy-first stance doesn’t apply to their own new telemetry collection.

Now for the good news:

Commissioner Carr of the FCC points out that US internet speed are up 70% since the repeal of Net Neutrality.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Thanks to the unstopping barrage of updates pushed during “weekly update quarantine”, Patch Tuesday this month is pretty light. The typical computer should see roughly 900 MB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Internet Explorer, and MSRT (~600 MB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Catalina 10.15.4 and watchOS 6.2.1. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions. Be aware that the 10.15.4 update is known to brick some Apple hardware, so I recommend waiting for 10.15.5, due in about 10 days.

watchOS 6.2.1 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.363 is a security update.

Updates 2019-10-08

Hi, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for October 2019 and it’s pretty mild for anyone not using Apple products.

The next build of Windows 10, version 1909, will be released any time. This version will be minor compared to other Windows 10 upgrades and should be nearly indistinguishable from 1903. If you’re running 1903 now installing 1909 should have no negative impact. If you’re running an older version I recommend upgrading to 1903 before switching to 1909.

Windows 7 will fall completely out of support in only 3 months. Don’t run out the clock. If you are running a licensed version of Windows 7 you can still upgrade to Windows 10 and have a supported version of Windows for the foreseeable future. Get it done before it’s too late. Don’t want to do it yourself? Call me!
https://saferpc.info/contact/

This month we learned that sometimes the weakest link is support. ZenDesk, central to support for more than 120,000 companies from Airbnb to MailChimp to Vimeo, was hacked in 2016 and discovered it only last week. They’re doing things right: public exposure, contacting customers, describing the chain of events, getting outside help to research and resolve their issues. Unfortunately, this doesn’t eliminate the problems for the approximately 25% of their customers that were exposed in this breach.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. The typical computer should see roughly 2 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, .NET, Edge, Internet Explorer, and MSRT (~ 1.1 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Catalina 10.15, macOS Mojave 10.14.6 Supplemental Update 2, Security Update 2019-005 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-005 Sierra, iCloud for Windows 10.7, iCloud for Windows 7.14, iTunes for Windows 12.10.1, iOS 12.4.2, iOS 13.1.2, iPadOS 13.1.2, Safari 13.0.1, Xcode 11.0, tvOS 13, and watchOS 6.0.1. These are security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

macOS Catalina (10.15) is available! This is a large download and will take between 2 and 4 hours to install on most hardware. The release of macOS Catalina (10.15) means that macOS Sierra (10.12) is now no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS High Sierra (10.13) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

iOS 12.4.2 and 13.1.2 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 6.0.1 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 13.0 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 77.0.3865.105 is a security update.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (1903) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 3-6 GB through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever.

Updates 2019-05-14

Hi, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for May 2019.

This month was eventful.

Mozilla resolved the catastrophic end-of-extensions bug in Firefox that disabled all extensions worldwide for all Firefox users. From the rage and fear, you’d have thought the entire Internet was broken. While this event was disastrous for everyone who relies upon browser extensions for their daily lives (such as AdBlock), it was likely the single-most effective cleanup of malware in history.

Antivirus isn’t enough. According to reputable sources, a Russian hacking collective (Fxmsp) claims to have secured access to three leading antivirus companies.

According to the hacking collective, they worked tirelessly for the first quarter of 2019 to breach these companies and finally succeeded and obtained access to the companiesโ€™ internal networks.

The collective extracted sensitive source code from antivirus software, AI, and security plugins belonging to the three companies. Fxmsp also commented on the capabilities of the different companiesโ€™ software and assessed their efficiency.

Dell SupportAssist is probably the lowest-hanging fruit on your computer. An independent researcher was able to unwrap the Dell SupportAssist service and force install arbitrary software on networked devices using no more than a single DNS hijack and publicly-available “codes” that Dell uses to authenticate actions. Their design is roughly akin to taping the keys to your house on the front door. While you should, of course, remove SupportAssist, you should also treat this as a stark reminder of why you should never use untrusted networks.

Microsoft Office changed the EULA to their software, which triggered several different issues, including previously purchased software no longer working, new data sharing prompts and an unceasing series of popups for some users. Logging out of your Microsoft Account and back in resolves the issue for many, but others required registry hacks. Smooth move, MS.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.3 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, .NET, Edge, Internet Explorer, Flash, and MSRT (~850 MB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Mojave 10.14.5, Security Update 2019-003 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-003 Sierra, Safari 12.1.1, and Apple TV Software 7.3. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

iOS 12.3 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 5.2.1 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 12.3 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Adobe AIR 32.0.0.125 is a security update.

Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.192 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Fedora 30-1.2 is a major update improving compatibility, performance, and more. This build adds the optional Pantheon Desktop which will ease the transition of those coming from a macOS environment. Coupled with Darling it should now be much easier to leave Apple for Linux.
https://getfedora.org/en/workstation/download/

Google Chrome OS 74.0.3729.125 is a security update.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1903) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 3-6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever.

Updates 2018-07-10

Hi, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one.ย The typical computer should see roughly 3gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, .NET, Internet Explorer, Edge, Flash, and MSRT (~3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, Security Update 2018-004 Sierra, Security Update 2018-004 El Capitan, SwiftNIO 1.8.0, Safari 11.1.2, iCloud for Windows 7.6, iTunes 12.8 for Windows, and Wi-Fi Update for Boot Camp 6.4.0. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 11.4.1 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version.

watchOS 4.3.2 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 11.4.1 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 67.0.3396.101 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 30.0.0.134 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1803) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.
