Updates 2010-08-02

Hey folks!

Microsoft released an out-of-cycle update for all current versions of Windows to correct the LNK vulnerability publicized two weeks ago. Hit Windows Update *now* to ensure you have this critical security fix installed. This is a security update. A reboot is required.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released a number of security updates over the last couple weeks, for all OSX and Windows versions of iTunes, Safari, as well as non-security updates to iOS 3 & iOS 4. Please check the Apple Updater as soon as possible to obtain the most recent updates.

iTunes 9.2.1 corrects several bugs, including a remotely exploitable security vulnerability, iPhone4 issues, plugin incompatibility and reliability fixes. This is a security update. Use the Apple Updater to update to the most recent version.
  http://www.apple.com/itunes/

iOS 4.0.1 for iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 is released. This supposedly corrects the antenna software sensitivity issue, however, since this is not a security update, if you’re still using iOS 3 on your iPhone/iPod, I strongly recommend waiting for the whole “antennagate” scandal to settle before upgrading. If you opt to update now, you can get the update through iTunes 9.2.1 (see above).

iOS 3.2.1 for iPad corrects several bugs, including freeze bugs, search engine alternatives, wifi connectivity and display options.  This is not a security update. Get the update through iTunes.

Java 6u21 adds VM support, various bug fixes and corrects a security bug in drag & drop. This is a security update.
If you DO NOT already have Java installed, DO NOT install it now!
  http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
If you’re using a 64bit machine and use both 32bit and 64bit browsers, you should also install the 64bit version, available here:
  http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

Updates 2010-04-13

Hey folks!

Microsoft released just shy of a dozen updates today, addressing security issues in Windows (2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/7), Office (Visio and Publisher), Exchange, VBscript, and SMB. You should visit Microsoft Update immediately to install those which apply to your computer. This does include security updates. Depending on what you have open at the time of installation, a reboot may be required.
  http://update.microsoft.com/
Be aware that Windows Update is currently experiencing an issue with Windows XP clients (this month is the end of life for Windows XP SP1), which results in their server refusing to provide updates, asserting that your browser is not up-to-date. If you can’t access it immediately when you try – try, try, try again. 🙂

Apple released security updates for all current versions of OSX as well as updates to Time Capsule, AirPort, iPhoto and Firmware updates. This includes security updates. Use the “Apple Updater” to get the most recent versions of all the affected software.

Adobe Reader 9.3.2 and Adobe Acrobat 9.3.2 include multiple security fixes. These versions replaces all previous versions of Adobe Reader and Acrobat. This is a security update. If you’re using Adobe Reader 9.x already, use “Help, Check for updates” to upgrade to the most current version. If you’re using a version of Adobe Reader prior to 9.x, get Adobe Reader 9.3 here:
  http://get.adobe.com/reader
As with all Adobe products, be sure to UNCHECK any toolbars, add-ons and other “offers” both during download and during installation.

If you’re using a version of Adobe Acrobat prior to 9.x, you would be well served to either upgrade to 9.x (there are discounted upgrades) or uninstall it completely. Since Acrobat does not guarantee updates to previous versions, this could cause problems for you if you are not running the most current version.

Looking for an upgrade?

I regularly receive requests for recommendations on upgrades and new computers. This last month alone I’ve had over a dozen clients that really need to get a new PC. While the computer linked below is NOT for everyone, it’s something that has so many features and so much power out of the box, that it would likely last anyone purchasing it at least 7+ years, and for many people, over 10 years.

HP Pavilion Elite HPE-150F Desktop PC
  https://12pd.com/amazon?B00318CG64
Quad-core 64-bit processor supporting eight simultaneous threads, 1 terabyte drive, 8 gb of RAM, and a video card that supports three simultaneous displays, including DVI + VGA + HDMI. It’s over 20% off right now, but still weighs in at over $1,000.

Updates 2010-03-31

Hey folks!

Before I begin this time I’d like to take a moment to point out the prescient Dilbert comic from Monday. This Tuesday there were more updates released in any single day, throughout the day, than since last Fall. Many, unfortunately, will require reboots.
  http://www.dilbert.com/strips/comic/2010-03-29

Microsoft has released an out-of-cycle security update for Internet Explorer. One of the vulnerabilities it corrects is actively being exploited against IE6 and IE7, though this includes updates to IE8 as well. This is a security update. A reboot is required.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple has been busy this month:

OSX 10.6.3 and update 2010-002, iPhone Configuration Utility, Final Cut Studio, iMovie, Aperture, Logic Express & Pro, and more than a dozen printer drivers (including a Bounjour Print Services client). This includes several security updates, at least four of which are remotely exploitable and in the wild now. The most common flaw within these vulnerabilities is an overrun within TIFF image processing, which effectively allows an attacker to do anything they like with your Mac if ANY of the flawed applications are installed on your machine, simply by getting you to visit a webpage. This is a security update. Use the “Apple Updater” to get the most recent versions of all affected software. If that doesn’t work (errors are raised during download, for example) use the following link to individually download and install each update (using the Apple Updater as a guide to which downloads are required):
  http://support.apple.com/downloads/

iTunes 9.1 and Quicktime 7.6.6 were also released today. These are both security updates. The vulnerabilities can be exploited simply by opening an evil site (or a trusted site with ads on it) within any browser on your computer. Ideally, you should use the Apple Updater, but if that doesn’t work for you (or you didn’t install it), you can obtain the updates at the links below. If you have iTunes installed, use:
  http://apple.com/download/itunes
Otherwise, install only the QuickTime update, and ONLY if you already have Quicktime installed:
  http://apple.com/download/quicktime

Java Runtime 6u19 adds a couple dozen bugfixes, including “mitigating” (though not exactly eliminating) more than one significant security issue. This is a security update. All users should update ASAP:
  http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
If you’re using a 64bit machine and use both 32bit and 64bit browsers, you should also install the 64bit version, available here:
  http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you ALREADY have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.
