Updates 2018-07-10

Hi, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. The typical computer should see roughly 3gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, .NET, Internet Explorer, Edge, Flash, and MSRT (~3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS High Sierra 10.13.6, Security Update 2018-004 Sierra, Security Update 2018-004 El Capitan, SwiftNIO 1.8.0, Safari 11.1.2, iCloud for Windows 7.6, iTunes 12.8 for Windows, and Wi-Fi Update for Boot Camp 6.4.0. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 11.4.1 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version.

watchOS 4.3.2 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (1803) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Hi, Folks!

It’s not Patch Tuesday, but Apple, Microsoft, Google and more have released updates this week.

The best technology news of the century was released today. Perhaps the millennium. In about 3 years Adobe will finally discontinue support for Flash, effectively removing the largest bulls-eye from your computer. As an end-user, are you still using Flash — or do you only think you’re still using Flash?

The typical computer should see approximately 400mb of updates. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows and .NET. Use Windows Update to install the most current versions.

Apple released updates for macOS 10.12.6, OS X Security Update 2017-003, Safari 10.1.2, iCloud for Windows 6.2.2, iTunes 12.6.2, and Wi-Fi Update for Boot Camp 6.1. This includes security updates. Use the Apple App Store or Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

Apple iOS 10.3.3, tvOS 10.2.2, and watchOS 3.2.2 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Updates to install the most current versions.

Updates 2014-03-11

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday!

Once again – if you’re still running Windows XP, I strongly encourage you to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. Time is running out! There’s now less than 27 days and 20 hours remaining until Microsoft terminates all support for Windows XP.
https://12pd.com/amazon?windows+7+oem
The only good news on this front is that Microsoft has announced they’ll support Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Defender *for* Windows XP through July 14, 2015. This does not alleviate the simple fact that vendors don’t even patch all the holes they know about in a timely fashion (see the iOS update further down). There is absolutely no reason to believe a secure computing environment on Windows XP will ever be possible after April 8th.

Here’s a list of known (some are unpatched) holes in XP Microsoft will never address:
http://www.cvedetails.com/product/739/Microsoft-Windows-Xp.html?vendor_id=26

So far, there are 961 publicly known vulnerabilities in Windows XP — over 80 discovered only within the last year at an upward-trending average of approximately 82/year. Of those, more than half allowed an unauthenticated third party to execute code on the computer, often without anything to do with the browser. Ultimately this means that being “safe” online with an unpatched or unpatchable XP computer is impossible. The potential for drive-by exploits, service-related attacks, firewall-bypasses and so on exists regardless of whether you’ve turned off or removed java, javascript & flash. The only safe XP computer as of April 8th will be completely disconnected from the Internet.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled updates.

Microsoft released 5 updates for Windows, Internet Explorer, Silverlight, root certificates and Exchange. If running XP you’ll also receive an update that warns you of the upcoming XPtinction. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for OS X, iOS, iTunes, QuickTime, Mac PRO SMC, Boot Camp, Safari, AppleTV, and Pages. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 7.1 + 6.1.6 are security updates — patching vulnerabilities Apple has known about for nearly two years. While 7.1 addresses over 40 vulnerabilities, iOS 6.x did not receive a complementary update for this series. If you have an iPhone 3GS or earlier, it now has unpatched security holes that will not be addressed in any future update. Use iTunes to install this update to your Apple device.

Adobe Flash Player 12.0.0.77 is a security update.

Adobe AIR 4.0.0.1628 is a security update.

Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Updates 2011-05-11

Hey folks!

Microsoft has released updates for Windows and Office (from 2 to 9 depending on your configuration). These are security updates. A reboot is required. Internet Explorer 9 is also now being pushed for Vista and Windows 7, so if you’re not prepared for this upgrade (the interface changes a LOT), you might want to hold off. Use Windows Update to get these updates now:
http://updates.microsoft.com/
Be aware that one of these updates can really take some time and it will LOOK like the computer has crashed. Let it run, ten to fifteen minutes, if necessary – it will finish.

Apple has released updates for OSX 10.6.7, MacBook Pro and iMac EFI, MacBook Pro display updates, Boot Camp, Snow Leopard, FIPS, iPhoto, iOS and iTunes over the last couple weeks. Many of these are security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get the most recent versions.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

iOS 4.3.3 disables certain aspects of the “location cache” feature which improves privacy for iOS powered devices. Use iTunes to update to this version. This is not a security update.

Internet Updates

Trillian Astra 5.0.31 is released. This major version update is now “free” (ad supported), but I can’t say I’m fond of how the ads are implemented. The paid version now operates as a subscription model ($12/year). This is not a security update.
