Updates 2013-05-14

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! Today is a pretty average Patch Tuesday – Microsoft, Apple, Adobe and Mozilla have a variety of updates, many of them security-related. But the real outlier today is that there are security updates for RoboForm, GoodSync and FileZilla – and Greenshot demonstrates again why I absolutely love that program. Don’t delay, update today!

Microsoft released ten updates today correcting issues in Internet Explorer, Windows, Microsoft Office, Lync, Windows Essentials, .NET and updating the engine for MSRT. Updates weigh in at under 75mb. This includes security updates. A reboot is required. If you’re using XP, make sure you install the “optional” security certificate update, too!

Apple released iMovie 9.0.9, Thunderbolt Firmware 1.2, printer drivers and iOS 6.1.4. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Software Updater to get the most current versions.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me anytime, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2013-04-09

Hi, Folks!

This is actually a pretty mild Patch Tuesday, all things considered, but the severity of the updates is above average. For example, while all the common security updates are here again (Flash, AIR, Shockwave, iOS, Windows, OS X, Firefox, Chrome and so on), I’m surprised to see that Picasa, Evernote, phpMyAdmin, Coldfusion and even EA’s Origin all include security updates as well. Don’t skip these updates — many of them enable drive-by downloads which are sure to be exploited in ads on the most popular sites soon (if not already).

Microsoft released 9 updates for Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, SharePoint, Groove, and Windows Defender. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates to Apple TV, Safari, and OS X. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Software Updater to get the most current versions.

iOS 6.1.3 is a security update for iPad, iPhone, and iPod. Use iTunes to install it onto your device, or on the device use Settings, General, Software Update.

Adobe Flash Player 11.7.700.169 is a security update.

Updates 2012-05-08

Hey folks!

Microsoft released 16 updates today for Windows, Office, .NET, Silverlight, MSRT and an updated Certificate Revokation List (CRL). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
Note that among those “offers” included in the current cycle are Microsoft Security Essentials and the Bing Desktop application. If you already have a security or antivirus software you do not need (and probably should not install) Microsoft Security Essentials. You can ‘hide’ the update to prevent it from being offered again. Likewise, if you do not wish to install the Bing desktop toolbar and search service, you can ‘hide’ this option so it will not be offered again.

Apple has released several updates this month for printer drivers, an iOS security update and a removal tool for the Flashback trojan. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current versions of this software, and to check for and remove the Flashback trojan from your Mac.

Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.235 is a security update. This version corrects a security vulnerability that’s being actively exploited on multiple platforms (Mac, Win, Linux and Android). If you’re on Windows, ensure that you have Flash Player set to perform automatic updates (available since last month within the control panel), otherwise be sure to install this update ASAP. This is a security update.

Driver Updates

If you’re using this hardware – these updates are for you.

AMD Catalyst x64 12.4 adds newer hardware support, improved anti-aliasing, texture filter quality improvements, and various bugfixes. This is not a security update.

Office Updates

One or more of these are likely to be of interest to most people.

OpenOffice 3.4.0 is the first release since Oracle passed the license to the Apache Foundation, and shows significant progress, adding MailMerge, significantly improving CSV support, correcting and improving upon the library of functions and coding abilities, adding UTF-32 support to Math symbol catalog, improved defaults, performance, compatibility and style elements. SVG support has been added, as well as a significant range of graphics and line-mode capabilities. Last but not least, the name has been changed from “OpenOffice.org” to “Apache OpenOffice” or simply “OpenOffice”, which will surely frustrate those who’ve spent the last few years publicly arguing the finer points of trademark law on those four silly characters (“.org”).
http://www.openoffice.org/download/

Notepad++ 6.1.1 and 6.1.2 correct several critical bugs, including stability and crash bugs. This should be treated as a security update.

http://www.adobe.com/products/flash.html

Let me take a moment here and bring to light that Adobe, who learned of these security vulnerabilities (and exploit methods) over 4 months ago, delayed releasing an update for all previous ($$$) versions of their software, opting instead to push their new subscription-ware model. Not surprisingly, they released these security notices with no fanfare and little more than a “too bad for our existing customers” the day after they “launched” CS6. Shame on you, Adobe. For everyone else, if you’re looking for a powerful graphic suite without the price tag, check out Paint.net, Gimp, and Scribus. Even more options are listed at Alternative.to.
