Updates 2013-02-27

Hi, Folks!

Microsoft, Google and Adobe released out-of-cycle updates this week, and there are several others you’ll want to check on, too. Isn’t it odd that February is so short, and yet it usually has the most “unplanned” security updates?

Microsoft’s out-of-cycle update is a performance and feature update to DirectX that affects pretty much every high-graphic application from the last decade. This is not a security update. A restart is required.

Adobe Flash Player 11.6.602.171 is a security update.

For Mac users:

Adobe Reader 11.0.02 is a security update. Use Help, Check for Updates to get the most current version.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me anytime, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2012-06-12

Hi, Folks!

Microsoft released 7 updates today for Windows, RDP, IE, .NET, Office, VBA, Lync, and MS Dynamics. These are all security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for OS X, Java (now they’re only 1 major and 5 minor versions behind baseline), MacBook Pro, AirPort, iPhoto, iMovie, RDP, and Aperture. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current versions. A reboot is required.

iTunes 10.6.3 is a security update, but also provides several other fixes, including stability, performance, reliability and several bugfixes. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current version.

QuickTime 7.7.2 is a security update. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.257 and Adobe AIR 3.3 are security updates that patch actively exploited vulnerabilities. Adobe has reintegrated 32- and 64-bit installers into a single package, which will simplify updates on systems built within the last 5 years. To update, download each of these, close all browsers, then install:
https://12pd.com/click?air
https://12pd.com/click?flash
https://12pd.com/click?flashie

For Mac and Linux, update from here:
http://get.adobe.com/air
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer
This Flash build adds automatic update support to Mac – but you have to install this version before it’ll update for you!

These security updates also apply to every other platform that supports Flash and Air including iOS, Android, and Chrome. Use your device update mechanism to get the most current versions.

Java 7u5 is a security update. This update applies to all prior versions including previous major versions, so after installing 7u5 please visit your OS uninstaller and remove previous releases of Java.

Updates 2012-05-08

Hey folks!

Microsoft released 16 updates today for Windows, Office, .NET, Silverlight, MSRT and an updated Certificate Revokation List (CRL). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
Note that among those “offers” included in the current cycle are Microsoft Security Essentials and the Bing Desktop application. If you already have a security or antivirus software you do not need (and probably should not install) Microsoft Security Essentials. You can ‘hide’ the update to prevent it from being offered again. Likewise, if you do not wish to install the Bing desktop toolbar and search service, you can ‘hide’ this option so it will not be offered again.

Apple has released several updates this month for printer drivers, an iOS security update and a removal tool for the Flashback trojan. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get the most current versions of this software, and to check for and remove the Flashback trojan from your Mac.

Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.235 is a security update. This version corrects a security vulnerability that’s being actively exploited on multiple platforms (Mac, Win, Linux and Android). If you’re on Windows, ensure that you have Flash Player set to perform automatic updates (available since last month within the control panel), otherwise be sure to install this update ASAP. This is a security update.

SVG support has been added, as well as a significant range of graphics and line-mode capabilities. Let me take a moment here and bring to light that Adobe, who learned of these security vulnerabilities (and exploit methods) over 4 months ago, delayed releasing an update for all previous ($$$) versions of their software, opting instead to push their new subscription-ware model. Not surprisingly, they released these security notices with no fanfare and little more than a “too bad for our existing customers” the day after they “launched” CS6. Shame on you, Adobe. For everyone else, if you’re looking for a powerful graphic suite without the price tag, check out Paint.net, Gimp, and Scribus. Even more options are listed at Alternative.to.
