Updates 2026-03-10

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for March, 2026.

If your Windows 10 computer can not be upgraded to Windows 11 then you should either replace your device or use the Windows 10 ESU program to get another few months out of it.

Windows 11 25H2 is now available and Windows 11 23H2 and older are no longer supported. It’s safe to upgrade to Windows 11 25H2 now, but be prepared for the Start Menu to change. You will likely want to click the “View” drop-down and switch to List.

macOS 26 Tahoe is now available and macOS 13 Ventura and older are no longer supported. macOS 26 is now stable and you should upgrade to this version if your hardware supports it.

There were 1430+ major hacks, and over 350 application updates this month.
It’s a moderate month, with about 4.0 GB of updates for most users.

Updates 2022-11-08

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for November, 2022.

This month brings a new major version of macOS (13/Ventura) and a new major version of Windows 10. That’s on top of the nearly 100 major hacks, and over 130 application updates this month. Well, not really this month, since there were many more published on Oct 18th in the last newsletter. There is an OpenSSL security update, so almost every network or internet capable application has a security update right now. There should be about 4.5 GB of updates for most users.

Updates 2021-08-10

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for August, 2021. It’s a big one. There have been a series of Apple, Microsoft, and various hardware vulnerabilities, as well as the quarterly Oracle updates that kept the industry hopping. Couple that with Black Hat 2021 last week, which kept reminding us how poorly those who design our technology have done and continue to do.

Updates 2020-04-30

We just had to get one last update cycle in for “the April that would never end.”

It’s not Patch Tuesday, but updates to OpenSSL have prompted security updates for almost every browser as well as application updates to many others have triggered an out-of-cycle update.

This Month/Week in Technology

If you can’t trust the CDC not to taint the tests, you can’t trust the SBA with your privacy in their loan process, you can’t trust Apple with your data, you can’t trust your “home automation” to not expose your entire home to hackers, you can’t trust the CIA not to abuse their authority in the mainstream media and academia, you can’t trust the FBI to follow their own rules when making requests of the secret FISA courts, you *really* can’t trust your antivirus software not to put you at even greater risk of exploitation, you can’t trust anyone not to reuse passwords, and you can’t trust advertising publishers to keep their ad platforms safe for their target audience, then why should you ever even consider giving Google and Apple 24/7, permanent, extensive monitoring of everywhere you go and everyone you ever have contact with? I don’t. Even if Apple and Google were above reproach (and they’re not), the inevitable abuse by any platform like this makes Orwell’s worst dreams look tame in comparison.

Now for the good news:

Intel has finally opened up their graphic drivers so you can use them on OEM hardware.

Let’s Get Busy

Apple released iOS 13.4.1 for iPhone SE (2nd generation) and watchOS 6.2.1 for Apple Watch Series 1 and 2. These are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version.

Fedora 32-1.6 provides several new features, now uses nftables by default, improves regular maintenance routines, and updates libraries. This is a security update.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2017-08-08

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday. The typical computer should see roughly 1.2gb in updates today.

In security news, NIST (United States National Institute for Standards and Technology), the US government agency responsible for developing most US scientific and technological standards, is recommending new password implementation policies that, hopefully, most of the world will adopt in short order. Sophos has a great review of what’s happening here and this quote adequately summarizes the ridiculousness of the current situation:

No composition rules. What this means is, no more rules that force you to use particular characters or combinations, like those daunting conditions on some password reset pages that say, “Your password must contain one lowercase letter, one uppercase letter, one number, four symbols but not &%#@_, and the surname of at least one astronaut.”

Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, Flash, and MSRT (~1gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released an update for Pages EndNote Plug-in 3.1. This is a security update. Use Apple Software Update to install this update. A reboot is required.

ChromeOS 60.0.3112.80 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 26.0.0.151 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.
