Updates 2016-11-08

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday.

The typical computer should see roughly 2.2gb in updates today. It’s another big one. The Microsoft-specific updates should be easier, but no smaller, since they’re now packaging almost all updates in only two files for each supported version of Windows. Apple has updated all supported versions of their operating systems between 2 and 5 times this last month, and they seem to be stable now – so it’s probably safe to upgrade your Apple hardware. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Internet Explorer, Edge, drivers, .NET, Active Directory, VHD, RDP, and MSRT (~1.3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for OS X, macOS, iOS, iTunes, Pro Video Formats, Xcode, tvOS, Safari, watchOS and iCloud for Windows. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Google Chrome OS 54.0.2840.93 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version.

Oracle: everything. Oracle released security updates for 76 product lines covering over 230 applications. It’s easier to say, patch all Oracle software now than to try to even identify what the all are.

Adobe Flash Player 23.0.0.207 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2015-06-09

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! The typical computer should see roughly 160mb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released 6 updates to address issues in Windows, Office and Internet Explorer (~80mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Microsoft also announced the release date for Windows 10, a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.x (as long as you install it within the first year). Windows 10 will be released on July 29th, and will be a direct upgrade path (you won’t lose files, data or most settings or applications). You may need to reinstall some software. You may have noticed the Windows 10 logo in your system tray. You can use this to enable a local cache of the Windows 10 installation on your computer, however it will download a MINIMUM of 3gb to do so. If important updates are released before the launch in July, this could be updated or re-cached several times. If you have a slow, unstable or bandwidth limited connection, I recommend you wait until after the second Tuesday in August to enable this update. That will ensure you download the absolute least data necessary.

Adobe AIR 18.0.0.144 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?air
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Adobe Flash Player 18.0.0.160 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Once again – if you’re still running Windows XP, I strongly encourage you to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. Time is running out! There’s only 1 month, 24 days, 21 hours and 45 minutes remaining until Microsoft terminates all support for Windows XP. The only news on this front is that Microsoft has announced they’ll support Microsoft Security Essentials and Microsoft Defender on Windows XP through July 14, 2015.

It’s Patch Tuesday! While not really a lot of updates today, they’re big. Most computers will require about 500mb of updates, and some will easily exceed 1gb in updates. Sigh.

Microsoft released 8 updates for Windows, Internet Explorer, MSRT, MSE, .Net, Silverlight, SharePoint and Office (>100mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for OS X, Apple TV, Xcode, iTunes, iOS and Safari. These are security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates.

Adobe AIR 3.9.0.1030 is a security update.

Java 7u40 is a security update. If you do not have Java installed, DO NOT install it! Install Java only if you require it, otherwise, remove Java from your computer.

Adobe Reader 11.0.05 is a security update. Use Help, Check for Updates to get the most current version.

While we’re on the subject of Adobe, Adobe’s source management system for Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat and ColdFusion was hacked. Since code re-use is very common within any code library, and Adobe products have a history of being one of the most frequently exploited in the world, this means any secure coding issues discovered will be tested against all Adobe products in order to get the best ‘bang for their buck.’ Ultimately this means there will likely be a large number of zero-day vulnerabilities in Adobe products (from Acrobat to AIR to Flash to Photoshop) over the next few months. If you don’t NEED a specific Adobe program on your computer in the near future, it would be in your best interest to remove it temporarily.

As if that’s not enough, their authentication platform for customer profiles was hacked, too. If Adobe *knows* your individual account was compromised they’ve already reset your password and notified you by email, but since they only recently discovered that any of it was hacked (again, really), it would be in your best interest to go ahead and change any Adobe-related passwords.

This goes for accounts you may have on their forum, bug reporting system, Adobe Cloud and profile manager. Your encrypted password and email address have been compromised, as well as any financial data associated with your account. If Adobe is using a global salt and the attackers have access to the passwords for some of the accounts (and you can be sure that they do), then decrypting all the account details is only a matter of time. Change your Adobe password NOW and change the passwords for any sites where you’ve used the same or similar passwords, especially email, banking and online bill payment services.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone or kindle – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.
