Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2011-12-29

Hi, Folks!

Today Microsoft released out-of-cycle security updates for all versions of .NET that provide protection from an active series of denial of service attacks. While this is most common on servers, every Windows machine should apply these updates. These are security updates. A reboot may be required. Use Windows Update to get these now:
http://update.microsoft.com/

Adobe Reader 9+ and Adobe Acrobat 9+ have released critical security patches to address a severe vulnerability in how they handle embedded content. This is a security update. Use Help, Check for Updates to get the most current version. Since Adobe delays delivery of certain updates, these patches may not be generally available until mid-January. For your own safety, you should check several times from now until then to actually get the download.

Java 6u30 is a security update. This corrects a data parsing bug that has been very actively used to distribute malware over the last few months. Use the link below to download the offline installer, and if you’re running a 64-bit processor, make sure you download and install both the x86 and x64 version.
http://www.java.com/winoffline_installer/

Updates 2011-07-12

Patch Tuesday again, folks!

Microsoft released between 4 and 9 updates today, depending on your operating system and software configuration. Updates for Windows, Bluetooth, and root certificate store are included. These are security updates and a reboot is required. One of these updates is MS Office File Validation, which can significantly slow access to network files. If you experience problems (particularly slowness) accessing network files (such as Access, Word and Excel files) after installing these updates, please contact me for a registry fix.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple Software Update 2.1.3 (2.2mb) is available for all Windows and Mac OS X computers. No changelog is provided, but this is typically updated a week or two before a major update series is released – so if you have any Apple software installed, run this update. It could significantly reduce the overall size of future Apple updates. Use the Apple Updater to get this updates.

Apple also released Java for Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, and Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 10.5.8. These are security updates. Use the Apple Updater to get these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 10.3.181.34 corrects some compatibility issues. This is not a security update. If you do not yet have 10.3.181 however, this version does include security updates.
https://12pd.com/click?flash

Air 2.7.0.1953 corrects some compatibility issues. This is not a security update. If you do not yet have 2.7.0 however, this version does include security updates.

Sick of doing updates yourself?

Regular updates can mean the difference between infection and function. Compromise and defense. Between working and *not*. Any computer problem can be significantly aggravated by viral infection or application incompatibility. Everyone knows that installing updates yourself is a pain. Not only is it frustrating and time-consuming, but it’s easy to miss an update if you don’t know what to look for. Even this newsletter, which provides a list of most common application updates, is difficult for most people to follow. Quite simply, most people don’t even know what software they have installed.

Well over 95% of the virus/malware infections I see every single month would have been avoided by simply installing updates. It’s that important.

The difference between trusting that everything will “just be okay” and installing regular updates yourself or having a professional do it for you can save you literally thousands of dollars over the course of even a single year. Sadly, a typical infection “event” can cost upwards of $300, and in some cases the data isn’t recoverable.

To that end, I now offer remote and local update installation as a regular periodic and one-time service offering.

If you’re in Tuolumne County, CA you can drop your computer(s) off for me to install updates on a first-come, first-served basis. I’ll apply any applicable updates and then you can pick it up.

If you’re more remote (a few more miles, or hours or even continents away), don’t fret! As long as you have a reasonably fast internet connection (DSL/Cable/Satellite/Wireless) then I can install updates on your computer without you needing to unplug it or even shut it down. (Yes, I can do this for many in Tuolumne County, too!) These service calls can be performed completely remotely, and all you need to do is install a piece of software that enables me to assist you.

One-time updates include any available updates for your computer, and are billed at my regular rate for my hands-on time. For a new computer or a computer that’s never been patched, this can take as much as three or four hours depending on connection speed.

Maintenance subscriptions are offered at a 25% discount from regular rate and include updates within 3 days of Patch Tuesday each month, and a monthly price cap of two hours per device per month, regardless of how much time is required to install updates. Further, the first 10 monthly maintenance subscriptions will receive application of all out-of-cycle updates at no additional charge for the life of the subscription.

I’m providing this update service to individual computers and small to medium networks. We’re also offering discounts for networks of 4 or more computers with a regularly monthly service plan.

Call for details!
