Today is Patch Tuesday for December, 2021. This month has been relatively mild, especially for the typical user. Businesses are facing some serious Christmas disasters including massive botnets targeting WordPress, Log4j, payment platforms, and state-run “passport” systems. Nevertheless, the grind continues.

A Tesla server outage prevented owners worldwide from unlocking their cars.

Another 5 hour outage at AWS caused problems for thousands of websites that depend upon the “reliability” of cloud services. Netflix, Ring, Amazon Prime Video, Amazon deliveries, and Roku were just a few affected sites and services.

Google Photos suffered from a bug for 10 days that damaged all downloads over 128 MB. They alerted their customers to the problem about a month after fixing the bug.

Instead of focusing on providing a more secure product, Apple is suing the NSO Group for developing malware that exploits vulnerabilities in Apple products.

Google, Apple and Samsung payment services exposed to provide unlimited access to digital wallets without authentication.

Grafana – used in thousands of applications for the gorgeous displays it can provide – has patched multiple critical security vulnerabilities. Expect vendors to play catch-up as they release updates that update their Grafana libraries.

Like Grafana, Log4j is another widely used engine across thousands of applications – mostly in corporate and enterprise applications. It’s been exploited in 40% of corporate networks globally, so far. It’s not just corporate risk – even Minecraft is vulnerable.

A massive series of attacks targeting managed WordPress websites has compromised at least 1.8 million sites so far. Merely patching the sites and removing unused and out-dated plugins and themes would have eliminated the risk here.

Now for the good news:

Alexa.com is finally being shut down after 25 years of misrepresenting the web.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday this month is smaller than it has been in months. The typical computer should see roughly 2 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Edge, .NET, and MSRT (~1.5 GB). This includes updates for Windows Server 2008. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS Monterey 12.1, macOS Big Sur 11.6.2, Security Update 2021-008 Catalina, iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2, tvOS 15.2, watchOS 8.3, and watchOS 8.1.1. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 15.2 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

iPadOS 15.2 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

tvOS 15.2 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

watchOS 8.3 and 8.1.1 are security updates. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 96.0.4664.77 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The release of macOS Monterey (12.x) means that macOS Mojave (10.14) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Catalina (10.15) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (v21H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months and only supports any consumer builds for 18 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

The now-current release of the Windows 11 (v21H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need or use, reducing the attack surface. This includes “free” applications like Avast, OpenOffice, and games you do not actually play.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Today is Patch Tuesday for May 2019.

This month was eventful.

Mozilla resolved the catastrophic end-of-extensions bug in Firefox that disabled all extensions worldwide for all Firefox users. From the rage and fear, you’d have thought the entire Internet was broken. While this event was disastrous for everyone who relies upon browser extensions for their daily lives (such as AdBlock), it was likely the single-most effective cleanup of malware in history.

Antivirus isn’t enough. According to reputable sources, a Russian hacking collective (Fxmsp) claims to have secured access to three leading antivirus companies.

According to the hacking collective, they worked tirelessly for the first quarter of 2019 to breach these companies and finally succeeded and obtained access to the companies’ internal networks.

The collective extracted sensitive source code from antivirus software, AI, and security plugins belonging to the three companies. Fxmsp also commented on the capabilities of the different companies’ software and assessed their efficiency.

Dell SupportAssist is probably the lowest-hanging fruit on your computer. An independent researcher was able to unwrap the Dell SupportAssist service and force install arbitrary software on networked devices using no more than a single DNS hijack and publicly-available “codes” that Dell uses to authenticate actions. Their design is roughly akin to taping the keys to your house on the front door. While you should, of course, remove SupportAssist, you should also treat this as a stark reminder of why you should never use untrusted networks.

Microsoft Office changed the EULA to their software, which triggered several different issues, including previously purchased software no longer working, new data sharing prompts and an unceasing series of popups for some users. Logging out of your Microsoft Account and back in resolves the issue for many, but others required registry hacks. Smooth move, MS.

Apple released updates for macOS Mojave 10.14.5, Security Update 2019-003 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-003 Sierra, Safari 12.1.1, and Apple TV Software 7.3. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

iOS 12.3 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 5.2.1 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 12.3 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. The now-current release of Windows 10 (1903) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 3-6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. Alongside every major vendor updates, nearly all mobile platforms have major updates over the last month to address security issues with WiFi and a lot of hardware has hit, or is nearing, end-of-life (EOL).

This month Nvidia drops support for the entire Fermi line of GPUs including everything from the GeForce, GT and GTX models 4xx up to 8xx. If your video card falls in line with these models you should consider replacing the card or the device. While it will continue to operate it can no longer be secured.

Windows 7 is nearing EOL. It will be supported for less than a year from this posting. If you’re still using Windows 7 you need to start actively looking for alternatives. Windows 10 is a seamless upgrade for most, but switching to Linux is also a viable option for others.

The last couple weeks has seen Firefox 65 severely stumble as a result of Avast’s poorly designed MITM “security feature,” Apple’s FaceTime being abused to listen in to call recipients, whether they answer or not, and Facebook paying children to install an “anything-but-private” VPN. While each of these is a horrible abuse of trust, their supporters quickly dismiss the severity of the issues because they’re large companies. That’s not the way it works. The larger the company, the more thought and process went into each and every decision. If anything, this demonstrates exactly why these companies should never be trusted.

macOS 10.14 Mojave, iOS 12, and Win10 (1809) have all been released. Run your backups *now*.

Mojave will automatically install on nearly all Macs running today, even if it is not supported on that hardware. Be prepared for problems, especially on your older Macs.

As expected, the “battery life” fixes for iOS 12 actually broke charging for many devices. iOS 12.0.1 was released yesterday to resolve that and other security bugs.

Windows 10 v1809 is about 3gb when downloaded by the Windows Upgrader/Windows Update, so expect it to randomly install for any Windows 10 Home user over the next couple months, consuming 3gb of bandwidth to get it done. If you have a slow connection, it could end up trying to download 3gb per day per device, so you would be better off downloading the installer yourself and installing it to ensure that the upgrade completes. That said, you should, of course, postpone upgrading to 1809 for the next couple months and let the rest of the world be the beta testers.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. With Mojave, iOS, and Windows 10 v1809 having been released, many vendors are releasing compatibility updates to ensure their software will remain operable on the newer platforms. Expect the next month to have many other large updates as well.

The typical computer should see roughly 4gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released Windows 10 v1809 and updates to Windows, .NET, Internet Explorer, Edge, Flash, and MSRT (~3.5gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS Mojave 10.14, iOS 12.0.1, iCloud for Windows 7.7, iTunes 12.9 for Windows, Safari 12, watchOS 5, tvOS 12, and Xcode 10. This includes security update. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. macOS 10.14 Mojave has been released so devices running El Capitan (10.11) or older will no longer be supported. Your options are to either upgrade to at least Sierra (10.12) or replace your device. Mojave will not run on all Macs, just as High Sierra and even Sierra made some devices unusable. If in doubt whether your device will be able to support an operating system upgrade, be sure to perform a full disk backup prior to upgrade. You should do this anyway, just to be safe.

iOS 12 was supposed to improve performance and battery life, and resulted in breaking charging for many devices. iOS 12.0.1 fixes that as well as other security issues. You might want to connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC and create a backup with iTunes before installing this upgrade.

Windows 10 v1809 is now available. This build adds several new features, such as dark mode, multiple application tab support, integrated SSH, and improved privacy controls. It’s a huge download and if you’re running a Home version you should install it a couple weeks after it’s released to ensure that you aren’t surprised (and prevented from using your computer) when it installs automatically. Again, backups are good.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1809) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
