Updates 2010-11-15

Hey folks!

I’m getting a number of reports by people that are getting a “popup” about AVG being out-of-date, should they upgrade? Yes. DO NOT trust the installer, however, just to be safe. You can get the current version of AVG here:
  https://12pd.com/click?avg
If you’re only installing it on one computer, use the Download manager (first download link), otherwise, select the correct download for your hardware type (32-bit or 64-bit) and download the full installer. If your computer is from the last 1-2 years, it’s likely a 64-bit, BUT if you don’t know for sure, it’s easy enough to find out by pressing and holding the Windows key and then pressing the “pause/break” key. “System type” or “processor type” will have the details for you. These are huge files, tho, so if you’re using a “limited” connection, consider downloading during your grace period (if you have one), in order to avoid impacting your ability to use the Internet over the next couple days.

Also, I’ve seen several computers in the last few days that haven’t updated Flash or AIR. Folks, these are both CRITICAL security updates and need to be installed ASAP. Download the following THREE files, close all browser windows, then install them. As soon as possible. Really. 🙂

  https://12pd.com/click?flashie
  https://12pd.com/click?air

Looking for an upgrade?

Black Friday is coming. In less than two weeks, the largest sale for technology items each year will occur. If you’re looking for a replacement computer, and you can get to a tech store before 8am, you might get a great deal. Otherwise, consider shopping online instead – it’ll save you time, frustration, and the headaches that go with Black Friday.
  https://12pd.com/click?amazonlaptops
  https://12pd.com/click?amazoncomputers

If you’re going to go shopping for a replacement computer, the important things to remember:

  • At least 3gb RAM.
  • At least a dual-core processor, though the more you have the faster it’ll be (for most people).
  • If buying a laptop, be sure to look at the touchpad buttons (sometimes they are difficult to use), the numpad+arrow keys (a lot of people have specific layouts they prefer), and check the bottom for ventilation – it should have at least 2 fans and vents on at least 2 sides.
  • If buying a desktop, DO NOT buy a “low profile” or “mini” computer – as these tend to have much smaller power supplies and overheat far more frequently. Also, look for ventilation – there should be what look like two fans on the back of the machine – NOT one.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Updates 2010-10-12

Hey folks!

Microsoft has released more than a dozen updates today, correcting nearly 50 vulnerabilities in Windows, and MS Office. This includes security updates. Use Windows Update to get these updates as soon as possible:
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates to MacBook Firmware that corrects issues related to new A/C adapters. Use the Apple Updater to get the most recent updates.

Adobe Reader 9.4 and Adobe Acrobat 9.4 were released. These are critical updates – if you have Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed (and chances are VERY good that you do), install this update immediately through Help, Check for Updates. For most users, a reboot is not required. If you have not yet updated to Adobe Reader 9, get version 9.4 here:
  http://get.adobe.com/reader/
If you’re using a version of Adobe Acrobat prior to 9.x, you would be well served to either upgrade to 9.x (there are discounted upgrades) or uninstall it completely. Since Acrobat does not guarantee updates to previous versions, this could cause problems for you if you are not running the most current version. Beware, however, that Acrobat 9 does require newer versions of MS Office than it’s predecessors, so you may be forced to upgrade to MS Office 2010 as well. If your only requirement is to export Word Documents “with links” to PDF, consider using OpenOffice.org instead, which you can obtain from the link below (and ditch Acrobat!). OpenOffice.org supports every popular document format, and can export to PDF preserving data, links and content:
  http://openoffice.org/

Adobe AIR 2.0.4 is a security update. Please update as soon as possible.
  https://12pd.com/click?air

Adobe also released updates for After Effects. When possible, use Help, Check for Updates, but if your application doesn’t offer that option, use the following URL to find and download each update for your software:
  http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Browser Updates

  http://shark007.net/win7codecs.html

LogMeIn Win 4.1.1558 is a network protocol update. If you already have LogMeIn installed, you’ve probably already been prompted to install this update. It *is* a legitimate update. Updates 2010-09-29

Hey folks!

Microsoft is releasing two out-of-cycle updates today. One is related to crashes caused by USB-based video devices (webcams and such). The other is a security fix for IIS correcting the behavior of .Net error management services for which there are exploits in the wild. While this update only really affects the Windows web hosting platform, IIS, that module is installed by default in some versions of Windows, and available in all Windows operating systems from the last decade, so it is in your best interest to install it even if you think you don’t need it. Use Windows Update to obtain these updates. A reboot is required.

Silverlight 4.0.50917.0 is a reliability update that corrects incompatibilities between Silverlight and browser toolbars. This is not a security update. Use Windows Update to get the most recent version.

Security Software Updates

One or more of these is likely to be of interest to most people.

AVG 2011 is a new major build of AVG, now offered in both 32bit and 64bit versions. While not immediately obvious, both the installer and the application are redesigned to be simpler to use. The new version also includes significantly better performance on most systems, as it changes the scanning methodology to keep archival data about previous scans, in order to avoid redundant scanning. It also includes filestamp processing through a cloud-based database of files, which effectively reduces the time wasted scanning files that exist elsewhere — that is, if exactly the same file is already known to be safe on thousands of other computers, why scan it again? If you’re using AVG, you MUST download the new version, UNINSTALL your old version and install the new version soon. The sooner you do it, the better off you’ll be, but you MUST do it within 3 months, which is their typical tolerance for previous versions: update it as soon as is feasible for you to do so, because an anti-virus application that isn’t regularly updated is *worse* than no anti-virus at all.

Utility Updates

These are unlikely to be of interest to most people.

CCleaner 2.36.1233 adds FTP account cleaning, PSP, VLC, Winamp, MBAM and several other programs, while improving support for Quicktime and others, and some other minor changes. This is not a security update.

LogMeIn 4.1.1556 doesn’t provide a changelog, but since it has system access and is remotely controlled, this should be treated as a security update. Right-click on the LogMeIn icon in your tray and select “Open LogMeIn”, click “About”, then “Check for Updates”. After a few minutes of downloading, the updater will start. You’ll be prompted to click “Update”, approve installation and finally “close” the installer when done. Alternatively, you can download the full installer from:
