Hi, Folks!
It’s Patch Tuesday! Several of the updates this month patch security holes that are being actively exploited in the wild. Sometimes it’s okay to be a couple days late doing updates. This is not one of those time. Patch now.
Microsoft released 8 updates for Windows, Internet Explorer, and Office (>70mb). Two of these updates patch vulnerabilities that are being actively exploited in the wild. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/
Be sure to select the “optional” Root certificate update and uncheck Bing Bar!
Also, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 11 this month. This is a major update with several new features — and undoubtedly will include new bugs, both at the browser and security levels, but also in rendering websites you already use. There are already reports that social websites (including Facebook) have significant issues in IE11. I strongly recommend you wait until at least next month to install it so they can work out the kinks on other people who have less to lose than you.
Apple released updates for OS X, iOS 7.0.3, iTunes 11.1.3, Safari 6.1, Apple Remote Desktop, OS X Server 3.0, Keynote 6.0, Java, printer drivers and more. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.
Included in this month’s cycle is OS X 10.9 (aka “Mavericks” – they’ve finally stop using cat names!). This is a major update providing security, stability and usability improvements. Oh, and for the first time Apple has decided to release a major OS update free for hardware capable of supporting it.

After updating to Mavericks go back to the Apple Software Updater and enable automatic updates (finally!) and install the security updates that have been released since Mavericks was released a couple weeks ago.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone or kindle – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.
Important Notes
Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.
Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.
It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.
Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details: https://saferpc.info/updates/
