On the Death of QuickTime

Recently, when Google pulled the plug on Picasa, it was suicide. Picasa had been maintained, it was stable, it was functional. They made way to lure people to Google Photos by discontinuing support for Picasa.

QuickTimeApple pulled the plug on QuickTime for Windows today though, and that was murder.

QuickTime for Windows has never been exactly stable or secure. It’s one of the apps I always remove unless the client is absolutely “sure” they need it for some reason. (Did you see the quotes there? Most people think they need something only because they recognize the name — it’s almost never about whether they actually use it.)

I don’t think I’ve ever been told by anyone that they actually needed QuickTime after it was gone. It doesn’t really provide anything more than a codec to display certain file types that nearly every current media package already supports. The player itself is poorly designed and lacks core features and functionality that were included in Windows Media Player for Windows 95…over 20 years ago.

Well, this time is different. When Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) contacted Apple 6 months ago about two separate security vulnerabilities. Apple acknowledged receipt then sat on the vulnerabilities until last month, when Apple told ZDI that they had decided not to support QuickTime for Windows anymore. Then Apple sat on it for another month to “coordinate” their announcement of deciding to stop supporting QuickTime for Windows until ZDI announced that it had these vulnerabilities that would never be patched. That’s like waiting for people to finish eating before telling them the food is poisoned.

As of posting, QuickTime for Windows was still available for download through the Apple website and they had not yet published any indication that they will no longer support it. They might not post a security advisory indicating that it is no longer supported. They don’t go out of their way to inform Mac users when their hardware is no longer supported, those users just don’t get updates anymore and they have to figure it out for themselves or read the very fine print on some webpage they’re unlikely to ever visit. That said, it’s been over 6 months and they’ve told prestigious security organizations that they are abandoning QuickTime, so I would remove it from your devices immediately.

In their defense, anyone that checked out the security history of QuickTime would have removed it (like me) years ago.

On 2016-04-21 they updated the QuickTime for Windows page to redirect to a page that mentions in the fine print that QuickTime is no longer supported by Apple. It’s still available from many online sources, and will not be removed automatically by Apple Software Update, so it’s up to you to secure your computer.

The closest thing you can expect to an end-of-life statement from Apple on QuickTime for Windows

The closest thing you can expect to an end-of-life statement from Apple on QuickTime for Windows

Remove QuickTime from your Windows devices. The normal Uninstall Program functionality will remove QuickTime in a few seconds, then, just to be safe, reboot the computer.

Keep it clean out there,

On the Death of Picasa

Oops, Google did it again.

Google "Mic Drop": How not to end a conversation

Google “Mic Drop”: How not to end a conversation

In keeping with Google’s hilarious business-killing “Mic Drop” April Fool’s Day joke, they have demonstrated their defective logic once more.

Google has a very simple, yet consistent, annual process for spring cleaning. Perhaps they don’t plan it this way, but it is, nevertheless, the way it works. First, they find the apps their customer base absolutely love the most. Next, they kill it.

Google (or should I say, “Alphabet Inc”) is currently killing Picasa and replacing it with the web-based Google Photos service (formerly “Google+ Auto-Backup”), which requires you to store your photos in their cloud in order to operate. 🙁

Google: Moving on from Picasa

Obviously that won’t work out too well if you don’t have a reliable Internet connection. More than a third of Tuolumne County doesn’t even have Internet access at home, meaning they won’t be able to use the Google Photos service. The majority of those who do have Internet access have such abysmal speeds or bandwidth caps that doing so would be either impossible, or painful, to say the least.

Have you still got Picasa? It’ll never be updated again (among other things, this means no security fixes!), but it will continue to run. Looking for an alternative? Check out KritaFlickr (1TB free storage!) and FastStone Image Viewer.

I would recommend you ask on Vark to find other alternatives, but Google killed it a few years ago. This was after Google killed Google Gears, and Google Wave, but before they killed iGoogle, Google Reader and Google Code. Let’s have a moment of silence, shall we?

I can’t help but wonder what the actual Alphabet would look like if Google (now Alphabet Inc) were in charge of it. Can you imagine?

Updates 2015-05-12

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! It’s a pretty heavy load today, with several updates that require direct interaction. The typical computer should see roughly 400mb in updates. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released 24 updates to address issues in Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Security Essentials, Silverlight, .NET, and Microsoft Office (~250mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for OS X, OS X Server, Safari, iCloud, RAW compatibility, and several drivers. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Reader and Acrobat 11.0.11 are security updates. Since Adobe has released Adobe Acrobat DC the native update engine has become unreliable for 11.x versions. You may need to either switch to Adobe Acrobat DC or have significant patience to download the 11.0.11 update.

Adobe AIR 17.0.0.172 is a security update.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2014-01-14

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! And not just any Patch Tuesday, but the first one of the year — when many vendors implement new behaviors, new schedules and new problems.

On that note…

“The time has come,” the Walrus said, “To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–  Of cabbages–and kings–
And why the sea is boiling hot–  And whether pigs have wings.”

Before we begin, I want to take a moment to warn the many Windows XP users of the upcoming end of support. Microsoft has confirmed that April 8th will be the last day Windows XP will receive updates or support of any kind. The same goes for Microsoft Office 2003.  As a result of this move, I expect a series of new malware for XP to be released *immediately* afterwards, perhaps as soon as 10:01am on April 8th – a minute after the last updates for XP are released.

If you’re still running Windows XP (along with more than 28% of the rest of the world), I strongly encourage you to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. Windows 7 will run on most hardware running Windows XP and will be supported by Microsoft until 2020. It’s not for retail sale anymore, but you can pick it up on Amazon for as little as $85 (sometimes). This close to the end, availability will suffer. Make sure you get the correct version for your hardware (32bit vs 64bit) and no, the “Anytime Upgrade” is not for Windows XP. One last note: all “upgrades” to Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 from Windows XP require a complete reinstall. You’ll lose your settings & applications and may lose data, depending on how you’re currently set up. When possible, I strongly recommend you install to a new clean drive, even if only temporarily, then migrate your settings and data using the Migration Wizard from the old drive, then you can clone the new install back to the old drive. This is a time consuming process but it will preserve the most data & settings from your existing installation.

…and now back to our regularly scheduled updates.

Microsoft released 4 updates for Office, Windows, Server, MSRT, Windows Defender and Dynamics AX. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Updates 2013-04-09

Hi, Folks!

This is actually a pretty mild Patch Tuesday, all things considered, but the severity of the updates is above average. For example, while all the common security updates are here again (Flash, AIR, Shockwave, iOS, Windows, OS X, Firefox, Chrome and so on), I’m surprised to see that Picasa, Evernote, phpMyAdmin, Coldfusion and even EA’s Origin all include security updates as well. Don’t skip these updates — many of them enable drive-by downloads which are sure to be exploited in ads on the most popular sites soon (if not already).

Microsoft released 9 updates for Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, SharePoint, Groove, and Windows Defender. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates to Apple TV, Safari, and OS X. This includes security updates. Use the Apple Software Updater to get the most current versions.

iOS 6.1.3 is a security update for iPad, iPhone, and iPod. Use iTunes to install it onto your device, or on the device use Settings, General, Software Update.

Adobe AIR 3.7.0.153 is a security update.

Adobe Flash Player 11.7.700.169 is a security update.

Call or email me anytime, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:
