Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday. The typical computer should see roughly 2gb in updates today.

The Windows 10 Creators Update (aka 1703, aka TH4) is being released today. It’s a major upgrade that adds several maintenance features as well as a few new core apps, such as 3D support in Paint. I strongly advise you to wait to install this update until at least next Wednesday, after the lemmings have encouraged MS to patch whatever bugs have gone unseen until now.

Windows Vista dies next week. It won’t be missed. However, both users of Vista will need to either replace their computers or switch to a more secure operating system, such as Fedora. If you need help, contact me.

Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, .NET, Windows Server, Internet Explorer, Edge, Silverlight, Flash, MSRT, and MS Office (~1.5gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for macOS 10.12.4, OS X 10.11.7, iOS 10.3.1, iTunes 12.6, tvOS 10.2, watchOS 3.2, Safari 10.1, Pages 6.1, Numbers 4.1, Keynote 7.1, macOS Server 5.3, and iCloud for Windows 6.2. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

iOS 10.3.1 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 57.0.2987.146 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 25.0.0.148 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Microsoft released 7 updates for Windows, Office, and Internet Explorer. This includes security updates (~60mb). A reboot is required. Some of the vulnerabilities these updates resolve apply to Windows XP but will never be patched on that platform. Upgrade to Windows 7 NOW or switch to a new computer.
