It’s Patch Tuesday. Happy Anniversary to my beautiful bride — sorry it fell on Patch Tuesday. 🙁

*Updated to add updates for Flash, WinSCP and WifiInfoView.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.7gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, Flash, .NET and MSRT (~1.5gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates to macOS High Sierra, watchOS, and iOS. These are security updates. A reboot is required.

macOS High Sierra 10.13 “Supplemental Update” is a security update. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current version.

watchOS 4.0.1 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

iOS 11.0.1 and 11.0.2 are both security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current version. The battery drain and random recipient problems are known and will be addressed “soon.”

ChromeOS 61.0.3163.113 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 27.0.0.159 does not provide a changelog (which is very weird for Adobe), so should be treated as a security update.

The quarterly Java security patch will be released next week. Since you’re doing updates today anyway, consider REMOVING Java so you don’t have to next week. Chances are good you don’t actually require it, so leaving it on your computer only increases your risk.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

It’s Patch Tuesday.

Be aware that Adobe Reader 11 will be end-of-life in only a month, so it’s time to either remove Adobe Reader completely, or replace it with Acrobat DC. Likewise, Windows 10 v1511 will be end-of-life in October as well — all prior versions are already end-of-life and should have been replaced. If you haven’t upgraded to v1703 (aka “Creators Update”) yet, do so now here.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.5gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, Flash, .NET, and MSRT (~1.3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

ChromeOS 60.0.3112.112 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 27.0.0.130 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

Instead of installing those updates anyway, I strongly suggest you wait for the “all clear” — there’s no telling just how serious the problems are until they are resolved. Installing them anyway could leave your device even less secure or potentially unbootable.

Everything else should be safe, though, so let’s get started. The typical computer should see roughly 800mb in updates today.

Apple released updates for iOS 10.2.1, macOS Update 10.12.3, Safari 10.0.3, GarageBand 10.1.6, watchOS 3.1.3, iTunes 12.5.5, iCloud for Windows 6.1.1, tvOS 10.1.1, Logic Pro X 10.3 and Security Update 2016-003 Supplemental. Google Chrome OS 56.0.2924.87 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 24.0.0.221 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.6gb in updates today. The new MS update engine will help if you’re using the peer-to-peer features on *local* networks, or it will kill your performance if it’s touching the ‘net. The new release cycle of 1gb blobs is great for mass distribution, but chews through bandwidth if you’re not peering it for other devices on your LAN. Adobe has released 10 separate security updates today – still not remotely close to Oracle Tuesday last month, but more people use Adobe products than Oracle’s. The other updates run the gamut: every browser and almost everything from Chrome OS to WordPress. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Office, .NET, Edge, IE, Flash, Exchange, AAD, TZData, Uniscribe, SSPI and MSRT (~1.25gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required. NOTE: For some devices a second update+reboot cycle will be necessary!

Apple released updates for OS X, macOS, Safari, iTunes, iCloud for Windows, iOS, Transporter, watchOS, and tvOS. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

It’s Patch Tuesday. Quite often you’ll read my posts about what needs to be updated and when, but this month I’d like to take the opportunity to remind you to remove stuff. If you’re not using it, remove it. If you don’t need it, remove it. If you aren’t sure whether you need something, chances are good you don’t, so remove it. You can almost always reinstall whatever you remove, so if you’re not sure, ask your IT guy (or me) and *then* you can remove it.

One of the primary principles of security is to “reduce the attack surface.” What this means is to make yourself a smaller target for attackers in order to avoid at least some of the attacks that might otherwise get through. Installing regular updates is the most important thing you can do, but removing unsupported software is a very close second. Beyond these two principles are several other behavioral changes (user education) which can make the difference between victim and victor.

Here’s a couple examples of recent software where the vendor will no longer support it, and the risk of leaving it on is too great:

IBM/Lenovo has discovered a security vulnerability in their Lenovo Accelerator Application, and instead of releasing an update to it they advise all users remove it immediately.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Office, Edge, Internet Explorer, .NET, DNS, Group Policy, SMB Server, Netlogon, WPAD, Kernel drivers, Exchange, Windows PDF, Active Directory, Windows Diagnostic Hub, and Windows Search (~1.2gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for OS X El Capitan 10.11.5, Safari 9.1.1, tvOS 9.2.1, watchOS 2.2.1, iOS 9.3.2, iTunes 12.4.1, AirPort Base Station 7.7.7 and Brother Printer drivers. These are security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.
