Updates 2016-02-09

Hi, Folks!

It’s Safer Internet Day…and Patch Tuesday! Google is offering 2GB of additional Google Drive storage to any users who take a minute out of their day to review their security settings. It’s fast and easy.

The most effective change you can make to ensure a safer computing experience is OpenDNS. It’s not compatible with all ISPs, unfortunately, but it will almost always work, so set it up NOW.

Now back to Patch Tuesday.

The typical computer should see roughly 600mb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released 13 updates to address vulnerabilities in Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, MS Office, RDP, and .NET (~500mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for OS X, Pro Video Formats, printer drivers and an App Store compatibility update. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Google released a security update for Chrome, and added a warning to notify users of the impending demise of Chrome for XP, Vista, and all versions of OS X before Mavericks (10.9). I’ll be posting about this soon, but what you need to know right now is that these operating systems (sans Vista) are already out of support for almost all other software. You need to either upgrade or switch to a supported OS. Period. Just because something appears to work doesn’t mean it’s not chock full of holes and your device seriously infected as a result. Malware today isn’t designed to be obtrusive, so you may not even know you’re infected.

Adobe AIR 20.0.0.260 is a security update.

Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Adobe Flash Player 20.0.0.306 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2016-01-12

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! The typical computer should see roughly 250mb in updates today. Let’s get started.

If you’re still running Windows 8 (not 8.1), you will no longer receive Windows updates. You MUST install 8.1 to continue to receive security updates for Windows.

Today is the last day for updates to “older” versions of Internet Explorer. Historically, this means that a critical security issue will be discovered and exploited as early as tomorrow. Upgrade Internet Explorer to the latest version supported by your operating system NOW. Yes, this means you’ll lose DQSD. 🙁 Even if you’re not using Internet Explorer as your primary browser, many applications including Office, Windows Explorer and third party components will still utilize Internet Explorer “under the hood”. Thus, whether you want it or not, you MUST install the current version to ensure you continue to receive security updates that *do* impact you.

Windows 10 will be switched from an “optional” update to an “important” update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 today, which means that it will attempt to automatically install whenever you install updates (and sometimes just for fun at 3am) and will also download (3gb+!) whether or not you plan to install it.

The privacy controls for some features are buried in places most people won’t look, and the defaults for some options are very insecure. The delay and potential issues you may experience from neglecting to either update or block the update can have serious repercussions.

My recommendation is to make some time to install Windows 10 as soon as possible. Typically the installation will take between 2 and 6 hours, with no ability to do other things on your computer while it’s installing. During installation you will be prompted with several option pages to enable/disable options and features. Disable them all. Yes, every single one. Uncheck every box and slide every slider “off”. Immediately after installation disable Cortana’s web-integration functionality, then go to All Settings and review every single option. If you have problems with Windows 10, you can revert to your existing OS.

If you are running software that’s not compatible with Windows 10, or need to prevent the installation for some other reason (such as my wife’s patented “I don’t wanna”) then your best option is to use GWX Control Panel to block the icon and disable OS upgrades (the first two options).

Now back to our regular patch notes.

Microsoft released 18 updates to address vulnerabilities in Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, MS Office, MSRT, Silverlight, Visual Basic, and Windows Live Essentials (~125mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for OS X, QuickTime and iTunes to address security vulnerabilities. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Updates 2015-11-10

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! The typical computer should see roughly 350mb in updates today spread across dozens of updates. Let’s get started.

Windows 10 is about as stable as it’s going to get. In the next few months, it will be switched from an “optional” update to an “important” update for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, which means that it will attempt to automatically install whenever you install updates, and will also download (~3gb!) whether or not you plan to install it. The privacy controls for some features are buried in places most people won’t look, and the defaults for some options are very insecure. My recommendation is to make some time to install it. Immediately after installation go to All Settings and review every single option. If you have problems with Windows 10, revert to your existing OS. If you need help blocking the upgrade, contact me.

Microsoft released a dozen updates to address 53 published vulnerabilities in Windows, Internet Explorer, Edge, Office, Hyper-V, Journal, NDIS, .NET, Skype, various security packages and MSRT (~135mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for OS X, OS X Server, Xcode, Mac EFI, iTunes, OS X El Capitan 10.11.1, Safari, watchOS and iOS 9.1. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 9.1 is a security update, and fixes quite a few other issues.

OS X El Capitan 10.11.1 improves stability. It doesn’t feel nearly as sloppy now.

Adobe AIR 19.0.0.241 is a security update.

Updates 2014-05-13

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday! Or should I say, it’s Heartbleed Fix Day!?

Over the last month, the world has made quite the news out of a popular open source security library, OpenSSL. SSL is the underlying framework for nearly all secure communication and encryption in the world, and OpenSSL is the library which powers over 2/3rds of this. This isn’t the first time that a security issue has been discovered in OpenSSL, and it surely won’t be the last. But this particular bug enables attackers to collect information from the memory of affected services and applications, effectively creating such a significant weakness that hundreds of vendors scrambled to patch the bug, while millions of accounts from thousands of sites and services were potentially compromised.

One of the worst aspects of a popular bug like this is that everyone and their mother has their own opinion of it’s ramifications, with some dismissing it entirely and others currently shaping a second (or third) layer of tinfoil. The truth is somewhere in between. This bug has dramatic significance to the security world. Cisco routers are affected (most with no fix in sight or anticipated), as are many ATM’s, many applications for every operating system platform, including email clients & servers, browsers, web servers, financial applications, routers, modems, middleware and dedicated security hardware. Some of these the individual vendors have said will never be updated. Many others require manual installation of the current OpenSSL libraries or recompiling.

As a rule, any application that touches the Internet or network should be treated as vulnerable until patched or verified to be secure. Over the course of the last month almost every affected vendor has released updates to address the vulnerability. Unfortunately, nothing short of a complete hardware and software audit can determine if you are vulnerable.

If you run a website or other web-accessible service, then before *and* after patching your software, hardware and devices, you should take the time to re-key your SSL certificates.

The important thing to understand about this vulnerability is that it first introduced over 2 years ago and only publicly disclosed last month. This means that all “secure” traffic over the entire last two years should be treated as suspect.

Change all your passwords. All of them. Really.

Re-key your SSL certificates.

Ensure that all your browsers and mobile devices are configured to check for certificate revocation.

Meanwhile, the first major exploit for now-defunct Windows XP was discovered in use the day after support for XP ended. In a move that surprised many in the security industry (myself included), Microsoft released an update to address this vulnerability to all current versions of Windows, and included a patch for XP, as well. This was a fantastic stop-gap for those still running XP, but is likely only an act of good faith, and will be the very last one you’ll see for XP.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled update series…

Microsoft released 10 updates for Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, .NET, Visual Studio and MSRT. This includes security updates (~95mb). A reboot is required. Approximately half of these patch vulnerabilities that are either actively being exploited or were publicly disclosed.
http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released updates for iOS, Apple TV, AirPort, OS X and printer drivers. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe AIR 13.0.0.111 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?air
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Java 7u55 is a security update. DO NOT INSTALL Java if you do not already have it installed! Remove it if you have any doubt whatsoever that you might need it. You can always install it again if you need it. If you do have it installed, make sure you update all versions that are installed, including both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions for your operating system, if both are installed.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.
