CrowdStrike published a buggy definition file to Windows-based devices, causing literally tens of millions of devices from Microsoft Azure, Airlines, Hospitals, Media, Banks and much more. The damage from this “update” can not be overstated: they released an untested, defective, definition to all devices within a 87 minute window and the “fix” to restore access on modern hardware requires a complex process involving decrypting the drive and removing the defective definition file from a system folder. This is already being called the largest IT outage in history. Locally, it even hit Chicken Ranch Casino.

Delta Air LinesGoogle Ads, iCloud Private Relay, iRacing, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft 365 Admin Center have suffered from outages this month.

Last months updates broke signed WDAC policies, Office Click-to-Run updates, tens of millions of computers (CrowdStrike), Google Password Manager, Bitlocker-encrypted devices, Remote Desktop, Microsoft Connected Cache, Microsoft Photos app, Microsoft 365 Defender, and Windows Update.

Stop using Zelle. The fraud risk is too high, and banks don’t care if you’re defrauded. Robots are not your friendsThe US Postal Service has been sharing your private information with Meta, LinkedIn and Snap. Microsoft – the organization primarily behind mandating DMARC – is sending Data Breach Notifications that fail their own DMARC rules

DigiCert is still breaking trust with the world by allowing malicious certificates to be preserved, in the name of ensuring maximum availability…for maliciously created certificates?

Hackers are much faster at exploiting vulnerabilities than vendors are in discovering and patching them. The US federal agency tasked with tracking known vulnerabilities (NIST) is seeing a growing backlog which could exceed 30,000 records in only a few short months.

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The release of macOS Sonoma (14.x) means that macOS Big Sur (11.x) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Monterey (12) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current — and final — release of the Windows 10 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. All non-LTS versions of Windows 10 other than v22H2 are now out of support, upgrade to v22H2 now. If you aren’t sure whether you are using LTS, you aren’t. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

The now-current release of the Windows 11 (v23H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 11 pushes you to get the latest Windows 11 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 24 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Windows 11 is now stable and can be upgraded to if your hardware supports it, but I recommend you continue to use Windows 10 until early 2025 before you consider switching to it.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need or use, reducing the attack surface. This includes “free” applications like Avast, OpenOffice, and games you do not actually play.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2018-09-11

Hi, Folks!

The next builds of macOS (Mojave), iOS (12), and Win10 (1809) are all due in the next month. There’s no better time to run your backups than now. Remember: with the short release cycle of software companies today, YOU are the beta tester, so be prepared – run backups.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one.

The typical computer should see roughly 3.5gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, .NET, Internet Explorer, Edge, Flash, and MSRT (~3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update 2 for MacBook Pro. This is a security update. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 31.0.0.108 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

macOS Mojave will be released next month so devices running El Capitan (10.11) or older will no longer be supported. Your options are to either upgrade to at least Sierra (10.12) or replace your device. Mojave will not run on all Macs, just as High Sierra and even Sierra made some devices unusable. If in doubt whether your device will be able to support an operating system upgrade, be sure to perform a full disk backup prior to upgrade. You should do this anyway, just to be safe.

iOS 12 is supposed to improve performance and battery life (we all know how well that worked in the past). This version is due within the month, so be prepared for a large download for your Apple mobile device. You might want to connect it to your mac or PC and create a backup with iTunes, too.

Windows 10 1809 is due out in October. This build adds several new features, such as multiple application tab support, integrated SSH, and improved privacy controls. It’s a huge download and if you’re running a Home version you should install it a couple weeks after it’s released to ensure that you aren’t surprised (and prevented from using your computer) when it installs automatically. Again, backups are good.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1803) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Browser Updates

One or more of these are likely to be of interest to everyone.

Google Chrome 69.0.3497.92 is a security update. This build also significantly changes the interface. The tab bar is larger and squared and the address bar now conceals some information that would otherwise be important (such as ‘www’ and the protocol – http vs https), relying instead only on a cosmetic lock indicator. This build also adds a prefetching header to finally join other mature browsers in alerting servers whether requests are prospective or due to user action. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current release.

Firefox 62.0 is a security update. This build also significantly changes the home page, adding large blocks for history, Pocket, and highlights. This version also improves CSS support and is one step closer to completely disabling weak Symantec certificates. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current release.

Firefox ESR 60.2.0 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current release.

Brave 0.23.107 is a security update. Brave is the best Chrome alternative I’m currently aware of, but is still a few days behind in security patches. Brave patches for the current Chromium release within 48 hours to their dev channel, but it takes a couple more days for that to be promoted to the current release.
https://www.brave.com/

Vivaldi 1.15.1147.64 is a security update. Vivaldi is slow to patch security updates from the Chromium base, so you should still avoid using it as your primary browser or you open yourself up to targeted attacks for known vulnerabilities.

Updates 2017-03-14

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday. This month brings the Vault 7 data dump, which exposed the machinations of a state-sponsored hacking organization with access to functional exploits for over a thousand applications and every popular operating system for both desktop and mobile. It’s a big deal. Vendors are ramping up their responses to address these exposed vulnerabilities so we can expect to see several out-of-cycle updates in the near future.

Microsoft released their delayed Windows patches, as well as more than a dozen updates to address new issues in Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, Office, Silverlight, Windows DVD Maker, Microsoft Graphics, Windows Media Player, Microsoft XML Core Services, Microsoft Uniscribe, SMB Server, Hyper-V, Internet Information Services, Active Directory Federation Services and MSRT (~1.3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for Logic Pro X 10.3.1, GarageBand 10.1.6 and Apple Remote Desktop 3.9 Client. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install the most current versions.

Google Chrome OS 56.0.2924.110 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 25.0.0.127 is a security update. Flash is being actively replaced with HTML5 on most sites and services, however, so unless you’re 110% positive you need it for critical functions, you should remove it instead. And, within those browsers that have it embedded (Chrome, Edge, Internet Explorer 11+) your best option is to disable it. It’s just not worth the risk.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Adobe AIR 25.0.0.134 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?air
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Updates 2016-08-09

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday.

Windows 10 Anniversary Edition was released this week. Don’t install it. There are many reports of stability problems after an upgrade. Be patient, they’ll fix it.

The typical computer should see roughly 750mb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates to Windows, Internet Explorer, Edge, and MSRT (~500mb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 9.3.4 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to get the most current version.

AMD Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.5.3 fixes several bugs, and improves performance. This is not a security update.

nVidia 368.95 is not a security update.
http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/4202/~/geforce-hot-fix-driver-version-368.95

nVidia OpenGL drivers for Windows 369.00, and Linux 367.36.02 fixes several bugs and adds support for the beta OpenGL 2016 ARB specification. This is not a security update.
https://developer.nvidia.com/opengl-driver

AcuRite PC Connect for XP and Vista has been discontinued. This software will receive no more updates and has been removed from the AcuRite website. If you’re still using this software (which implies you’re using either XP or Vista) your safest move is to switch to another operating system where you can use a supported application.

Display Driver Uninstaller 16.1.0.1 improves identification and cleanup. This is not a security update.

Browser Updates

One or more of these are likely to be of interest to everyone.

Google Chrome 52.0.2743.116 is the most recent in a series of 4 Chrome security updates released in the last couple weeks. Use Menu, Help, About to get the most current version.

Firefox 48.0 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to get the most current version. As of Firefox 49 – in about 5 weeks – Firefox will no longer support older versions of OS X (prior to Mavericks / 10.9). On older Windows machines, SSE2 CPU extensions are now required for Firefox 48+ which will leave some Windows XP and Vista machines unsupported. If you’re using an older/unsupported operating system, consider this your one-month warning. In about a month there will no longer be a secure browser available for you, so your machine can only safely be used offline.

WinSCP 5.9 is a security update.

Dropbox 7.4.30 no longer provides a detailed changelog, so should be treated as a security update, or preferably, abandoned. Software that doesn’t provide changelogs uses the fancy magical ability called “ignorance” to convince you to upgrade, possibly to a hacked or hijacked version, with no hope of validation from the author. A company like Dropbox, valued at $8 BILLION, should be able to spare someone on their build team to compose something more detailed than “The desktop client is regularly updated with many improvements and fixes.”
