Updates 2023-04-11

Welcome back, Folks!

Today is Patch Tuesday for April, 2023.

This month brings over 160 significant hacks, and over 170 application updates. This is pretty normal these days, and the updates will weigh in at a little over 2.5 GB of updates for most users.

This Month in Technology

Amazon has pulled the plug on their most successful charitable endeavor, AmazonSmile.

According to the FBI, 860 “critical” infrastructure organizations were hit with ransomware in 2022. Shouldn’t they just stop if they’re so concerned, since they’re usually the ones behind most terrorists?

It should come as no surprise that the recent spate of train derailments comes not long after a manager at one of the largest rail companies told inspectors to stop marking rail cars that needed repairs.

Apple Weather, Microsoft Defender, Reddit, and WD My Cloud suffered from outages this month.

Last months updates broke Red Dead Redemption 2, and caused problems for many printers by replacing the vendor print drivers with Microsoft’s incompatible drivers. But at least Microsoft is now inserting ads in the Start menu, right? Grrr.

Here’s yet another demonstration of how your “smart device” can be exploited without your knowledge. GM’s Cruise robotaxis have been recalled after they caused an accident in San Francisco.

Now for the good news:

Let’s Get Busy

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

Patch Tuesday is huge this month. The typical computer should see roughly
GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 22H2 should now be installed. Sadly, the new “Moments” features on Windows 11 will insert advertisements in the Start menu and Control Panel. Just another sign of the continuing decline of Windows.

Microsoft released updates to address 93 vulnerabilities in .NET Core, Azure Machine Learning, Azure Service Connector, Microsoft Bluetooth Driver, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Voice, Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based), Microsoft Graphics Component, Microsoft Message Queuing, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Office Publisher, Microsoft Office SharePoint, Microsoft Office Word, Microsoft PostScript Printer Driver, Microsoft Printer Drivers, Microsoft WDAC OLE DB provider for SQL, Microsoft Windows DNS, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Windows Active Directory, Windows ALPC, Windows Ancillary Function Driver for WinSock, Windows Boot Manager, Windows Clip Service, Windows CNG Key Isolation Service, Windows Common Log File System Driver, Windows DHCP Server, Windows Enroll Engine, Windows Error Reporting, Windows Group Policy, Windows Internet Key Exchange (IKE) Protocol, Windows Kerberos, Windows Kernel, Windows Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol, Windows Lock Screen, Windows Netlogon, Windows Network Address Translation (NAT), Windows Network File System, Windows Network Load Balancing, Windows NTLM, Windows PGM, Windows Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), Windows Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol, Windows Raw Image Extension, Windows RDP Client, Windows Registry, Windows RPC API, Windows Secure Boot, Windows Secure Channel, Windows Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP), Windows Transport Security Layer (TLS), Windows Win32K and MSRT (~
GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for iOS 15.7.5 and 16.4.1, iPadOS 15.7.5 and 16.4.1, macOS Big Sur 11.7.6, macOS Monterey 12.6.5, macOS Ventura 13.3.1, Safari 16.4.1, Studio Display Firmware Update 16.4, tvOS 16.4, and watchOS 9.4. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 16.4.1 and 15.7.5 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

iPadOS 16.4.1 and 15.7.5 are security updates. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 9.4 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 16.4 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Google Chrome OS 112.0.5615.62 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The release of macOS Ventura (13.x) means that macOS Catalina (10.15) and older are no longer supported. If you can not install at least macOS Big Sur (11) on your Mac then you should immediately remove it from the Internet and use it offline only. It will no longer receive patches or updates and can now no longer be secured.

The now-current release of the Windows 10 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 10 pushes you to get the latest Windows 10 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 18 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

The now-current release of the Windows 11 (v22H2) is very large so will take a long time to download on slower connections. Windows 11 pushes you to get the latest Windows 11 release every 12 months and only supports any consumer builds for 24 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, this process will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Windows 11 is still very young so I encourage you to wait a few more months before you consider switching to it.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need or use, reducing the attack surface. This includes “free” applications like Avast, OpenOffice, and games you do not actually play.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me any time, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Updates 2019-02-12

Happy Valentine’s Day, Folks!

Show her how much you care with a subscription to SaferPC!
https://saferpc.info/updates/

Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. Alongside every major vendor updates, nearly all mobile platforms have major updates over the last month to address security issues with WiFi and a lot of hardware has hit, or is nearing, end-of-life (EOL).

This month Nvidia drops support for the entire Fermi line of GPUs including everything from the GeForce, GT and GTX models 4xx up to 8xx. If your video card falls in line with these models you should consider replacing the card or the device. While it will continue to operate it can no longer be secured.

Windows 7 is nearing EOL. It will be supported for less than a year from this posting. If you’re still using Windows 7 you need to start actively looking for alternatives. Windows 10 is a seamless upgrade for most, but switching to Linux is also a viable option for others.

The last couple weeks has seen Firefox 65 severely stumble as a result of Avast’s poorly designed MITM “security feature,” Apple’s FaceTime being abused to listen in to call recipients, whether they answer or not, and Facebook paying children to install an “anything-but-private” VPN. While each of these is a horrible abuse of trust, their supporters quickly dismiss the severity of the issues because they’re large companies. That’s not the way it works. The larger the company, the more thought and process went into each and every decision. If anything, this demonstrates exactly why these companies should never be trusted.

The typical computer should see roughly 1.5 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Flash, Edge, .NET, and MSRT (~500MB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released updates for iOS 12.1.4, macOS Mojave 10.14.3 Supplemental Update, Security Update 2019-001 High Sierra, Security Update 2019-001 Sierra, Shortcuts 2.1.3 for iOS, Safari 12.0.3, watchOS 5.1.3, tvOS 12.1.2, iTunes 12.8.2 for Mac, Pro Video Formats 2.1, iCloud for Windows 7.10, and iTunes 12.9.3 for Windows. This includes security updates. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 12.1.4 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

watchOS 5.1.3 is a security update. Use the Watch app on your iPhone to install the most current version.

tvOS 12.1.2 is a security update. Use System, Software Update to install the most current version.

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.142 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Google Chrome OS 72.0.3626.97 is a security update.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1809) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 3-6 GB through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information. Windows 10 v1903 will be available within the next 6 weeks, and if you don’t have 1809 by then, it will be forced on you.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Updates 2019-01-08

Welcome to 2019, Folks! I’ve never been so happy to have a year behind me. 2019 is looking good even if it starts with a huge number of updates.

Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. Every major vendor has their regular updates, and it looks like every minor vendor took the holiday break to work on updates for their software, too.

The typical computer should see roughly 3 GB in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released updates for Windows, Edge, Internet Explorer, .NET, Flash, and MSRT (~2 GB). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

iOS 12.1.2 is a security update. Use Settings, General, Software Update to install the most current update.

Adobe AIR 32.0.0.89 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?air
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Adobe Flash Player 32.0.0.114 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Google Chrome OS 71.0.3578.94 is a security update.

Updates 2018-11-13

Hi, Folks!

It’s Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. Every major vendor has released security updates and there’s many smaller vendor updates released today, as well.

But before we get to that I want to briefly talk about something else. You’ve surely heard the phrase “Internet of Things” or “IoT”. This describes the common and growing practice of everything touching the Internet all the time. Besides the computers you have in your office and living room, the phone in your pocket, and the tablets you have littered across random flat surfaces across your home, there are now cars, toasters, refrigerators, light bulbs, irrigation systems, air conditioners, instant pots, and a million other things that are now Internet-enabled for our convenience or simply for the novelty of it. Nearly all of these devices don’t talk to the Internet directly, but through a router or modem which connects each of the devices at a specific location to the Internet through your Internet Service Provider. While it’s possible to hijack your light bulbs, fridge, and coffee maker, the low-hanging fruit of most networks is and always will be the router. This oft-overlooked device is poorly maintained and directly accessible from the Internet making it easy prey for attackers. Currently there’s a botnet called BCMUPnP_Hunter that has hijacked over 100,000 routers and is using them (and your Internet connection) to send spam and phishing messages.

In each case it could have been avoided.

All hardware is supported and maintained by the vendor for a limited time ranging from a mere 6 months to a decade. However, having it be “supported” is one thing – actually installing the firmware and software updates that would have prevented this and similar infections or proactively replacing end-of-life (EOL) hardware is critical. This neglect is like starving to death at a buffet. The updates and EOL information is out there, but you need to know your network (or hire someone to) and maintain or replace each device that touches it.

Know your network!

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

The typical computer should see roughly 4gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

The first major update to macOS Mojave was released this week, as well as the first major update to iOS 12. Windows 10 v1809 has been released again. This version was pulled for the last two months because of a show-stopper bug that resulted in deleting user files of people with a specific configuration. That issue is now resolved, but it highlights the importance of letting other people be the guinea pig for major updates like this. Updates are important. Don’t get me wrong. Stability is more important, though, and there’s no reason to put a stable, secure, and supported operating system at risk with what amounts to a beta release. Microsoft maintains several versions of Windows 10 and there’s no reason to rush to the latest build. Install their standard security updates, but wait on new releases.

Windows 10 v1809 is about 3gb when downloaded by the Windows Upgrader/Windows Update, so expect it to randomly install for any Windows 10 Home user over the next month, consuming 3gb of bandwidth to get it done. If you have a slow connection, it could end up trying to download 3gb per day per device, so you would be better off downloading the installer yourself and installing it to ensure that the upgrade completes. That said, you should, of course, postpone upgrading to 1809 for the next couple months and let the rest of the world be the beta testers.

In any case, sometimes we all need that reminder: run your backups *now*.

Microsoft released Windows 10 v1809 and updates to Windows, Flash, Edge, Internet Explorer, and MSRT (~3gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS Mojave 10.14.1, macOS Mojave 10.14.1 Supplemental for MacBook Air, Security Update 2018-002 for High Sierra, Security Update 2018-005 for Sierra, iOS 12.1, tvOS 12.1, watchOS 5.1.1, Safari 12.0.1, iCloud for Windows 7.8, and iTunes 12.9.1. This includes security update. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 31.0.0.148 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Google Chrome OS 70.0.3538.76 is a security update. Use Menu, Help, About to install the most current version. A reboot is required.

Fedora 29-1.2 is a new major version offering modularity, GNOME 3.30, Vagrant images, and more. This is not a security update.
https://getfedora.org/

Don’t forget to check your mobile devices, too! Many updates will also apply to your tablet, phone, kindle or television – so check your device-appropriate App Store and install updates.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1809) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 3-6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.

Updates 2018-10-09

Hi, Folks!

macOS 10.14 Mojave, iOS 12, and Win10 (1809) have all been released. Run your backups *now*.

Mojave will automatically install on nearly all Macs running today, even if it is not supported on that hardware. Be prepared for problems, especially on your older Macs.

As expected, the “battery life” fixes for iOS 12 actually broke charging for many devices. iOS 12.0.1 was released yesterday to resolve that and other security bugs.

Windows 10 v1809 is about 3gb when downloaded by the Windows Upgrader/Windows Update, so expect it to randomly install for any Windows 10 Home user over the next couple months, consuming 3gb of bandwidth to get it done.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program. Today is Patch Tuesday and it’s a big one. With Mojave, iOS, and Windows 10 v1809 having been released, many vendors are releasing compatibility updates to ensure their software will remain operable on the newer platforms. Expect the next month to have many other large updates as well.

The typical computer should see roughly 4gb in updates today. Let’s get started.

Microsoft released Windows 10 v1809 and updates to Windows, .NET, Internet Explorer, Edge, Flash, and MSRT (~3.5gb). This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Apple released macOS Mojave 10.14, iOS 12.0.1, iCloud for Windows 7.7, iTunes 12.9 for Windows, Safari 12, watchOS 5, tvOS 12, and Xcode 10. This includes security update. Use Apple Software Update to install these updates. A reboot is required.

Adobe Flash Player 31.0.0.122 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flash
Win: https://12pd.com/click?flashie
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?flashmac

Adobe AIR 31.0.0.96 is a security update.
Win: https://12pd.com/click?air
Mac: https://12pd.com/click?airmac

Google Chrome OS 69.0.3497.95 is a security update.

This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

macOS 10.14 Mojave has been released so devices running El Capitan (10.11) or older will no longer be supported. Your options are to either upgrade to at least Sierra (10.12) or replace your device. Mojave will not run on all Macs, just as High Sierra and even Sierra made some devices unusable. If in doubt whether your device will be able to support an operating system upgrade, be sure to perform a full disk backup prior to upgrade. You should do this anyway, just to be safe.
https://support.apple.com/macos/mojave

iOS 12 was supposed to improve performance and battery life, and resulted in breaking charging for many devices. iOS 12.0.1 fixes that as well as other security issues. You might want to connect your iOS device to your Mac or PC and create a backup with iTunes before installing this upgrade.
https://support.apple.com/ios

Windows 10 v1809 is now available. This build adds several new features, such as dark mode, multiple application tab support, integrated SSH, and improved privacy controls. It’s a huge download and if you’re running a Home version you should install it a couple weeks after it’s released to ensure that you aren’t surprised (and prevented from using your computer) when it installs automatically. Again, backups are good.

The now-current release of Windows 10 (1809) will cause your computer to feel unusually slow until it is installed. This is a side-effect of the Windows 10 upgrade cycle, which pushes out 6gb through Windows update to get you to the latest Windows 10 release every 6 months. If you don’t let it finish and you’re on a slow connection, it will kill your Internet performance forever. If you don’t have the bandwidth to download the bits, I’m happy to provide loaner USB drives to our local clients at The Farmory, or, if you prefer to have me mail it to you please contact me for information.
