Updates 2013-04-09

Hi, Folks!

This is actually a pretty mild Patch Tuesday, all things considered, but the severity of the updates is above average. For example, while all the common security updates are here again (Flash, AIR, Shockwave, iOS, Windows, OS X, Firefox, Chrome and so on), I’m surprised to see that Picasa, Evernote, phpMyAdmin, Coldfusion and even EA’s Origin all include security updates as well. Don’t skip these updates — many of them enable drive-by downloads which are sure to be exploited in ads on the most popular sites soon (if not already).

Microsoft released 9 updates for Windows, Office, Internet Explorer, SharePoint, Groove, and Windows Defender. This includes security updates. A reboot is required.

Important Notes

Everything above this section should be checked by everyone on every computer. Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates. This is not the case with the items below, though you should still check each line item below to see if it applies to software you have installed.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

It is essential to maintain all the applications you have installed on your computer, but often you can minimize the time investment and the potential for exploitation simply by uninstalling software you do not need.

Also note that using the applications own “check for updates” function, when available, will best preserve your current settings, and often avoid any crapware that might come with a fresh installer. Use this option if it’s available to you.

Finally, if you’re sick of doing this all yourself, let me! Call or email me anytime, and we can set you up with subscription SaferPC updates which will be installed each month whenever necessary. Click, call or email for more details:

Hey folks!

Apple released updates to Aperture, Digital Camera Raw Compatibility for Aperture and iPhoto, and ProKit. Use the “Apple Updater” to get the most recent versions of all the affected software.

Have a website? A reminder to everyone using Blogger through FTP. Google will stop supporting FTP through Blogger/Blogspot on the 15th – make sure you switch to something else before then! My personal preference is WordPress. It’s a mature application providing a broad range of capabilities, advanced plugins, themes and stylistic elements, and it can be managed even by someone that doesn’t have much experience with websites. And, as a bonus, it can actually import all of your archives from your Blogger site – including comments! Ready to make the move? Contact me!

Updates 2010-01-21

Hey folks!

These are both security updates. You should visit Microsoft Update immediately to install them. Depending on what you have open at the time of installation, a reboot may be required.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Apple released security updates for all current versions of OSX as well as updates to Main Stage, Logic Pro, Unitor, Boot Camp, Graphic and Firmware updates, as well as a Firmware restoration CD. If you have not installed 9.3 yet, you should do so IMMEDIATELY as these vulnerabilities are being exploited by a piece of “broken” malware that has so far brought half a dozen clients computers down completely, and it has been a *major* chore to get them up and running again. If you’re using Adobe Reader 9.x, use “Help, Check for updates” to upgrade to the most current version. If you’re using a version of Adobe Reader prior to 9.x, get Adobe Reader 9.3 here:
  http://get.adobe.com/reader
As with all Adobe products, be sure to uncheck any toolbars, add-ons and other “offers” both during download and during installation.

Chances are good that close to every single computer you touch will be affected by those updates, excepting only the Windows/Apple items. Wherever possible, I try to start each item with the product name followed by the new version number and the severity of the update, in order to facilitate a quick scan through the list to identify applications that apply to you.

Please remember that while I list many different applications within these updates, most people should ONLY install updates for a program if they already have a previous version of that program installed.

Inno Setup 5.3.6 was released this week, adding support for new Windows 7 functionality. This is not a security update. If you use Inno Setup, and are developing for Windows 7, you should upgrade to take advantage of the newer features:

Web Package Updates
These are likely to be of interest only to web developers.

WordPress 2.8.6 and WordPress MU 2.8.6 were both released this week. These are security updates. The vulnerabilities exposed enable an attacker to potentially gain access to all aspects of your site and run arbitrary code under the user account your site runs in. You should update your WP/WPMU sites immediately:

That’s all for now folks. Keep it clean out there. 😉

Updates 2009-11-01

Hey folks!

Microsoft has released several out of cycle updates for Windows to accommodate better interoperability with Windows 7. These are not security updates.
  http://update.microsoft.com/

Mozilla has released an update to Firefox, to version 3.5.4. This update includes security and stability fixes, including remote exploits. If you have Firefox installed, you are advised to update ASAP.

Opera 10.01 was released on Wednesday. This is the first patch for the “new” Opera, and corrects a major vulnerability in how “safe” zones are interpreted which could be used to run arbitrary code on your computer, as well as over a dozen other bugs. This is a security update. If you have Opera installed, you are advised to update ASAP.

SeaMonkey 2.0 is Mozilla’s composite web-browser, e-mail, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editing application. The 2.0 release incorporates the latest security and functionality updates from Firefox 3.5.4 and Thunderbird. This is a security update. If you’re using SeaMonkey, or are looking for a single application that supports all these features, give it a try:

Apple released iTunes 9.0.2 yesterday. This is a security update. If you have iTunes installed, you should install this update ASAP. This week Apple also released updates to Final Cut Studio & Apple Server Diagnostics, as well as a Bluetooth Update. Get iTunes here:
  http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Or use the “Apple Updater” to get the most recent versions of all the affected software:
Start, (All) Programs, Apple Software Update
Check everything at the TOP, but leave the bottom options unchecked.

Driver updates:
These are only necessary for certain computers.

ATI released Catalyst Drivers 9.10 this week, with “support” for Windows 7. About time. 🙂  This is not a security update. If you have an ATI video card, you can obtain the most current drivers here:
  http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx
You will need to know the card model to ensure you get the most appropriate drivers. This can be obtained within the Device Manager or with the very nifty utility CPU-Z on the “graphics” tab, which you can obtain here:

Utility updates:
These are unlikely to be of interest to most people.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.1.1 (MBSA) was released this week. Wow. Talk about a LONG time coming. It’s been 2 years since MS released an update to this network-capable security scanning product, and the only changes are added “support” for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. This is not a security update. Well, as much as a security scanner “can’t” be a security update.

VirtualBox 3.0.10.54097 resolves another 20+ bugs and adds better support for various hosts and clients, as well as a cleaner object interface UI – making it far easier to perform real-time changes to mapped objects such as USB devices, media drives and network resources. This is not a security update, but a couple of the updates do fix annoyances such as sticky keys.

DAEMON Tools Lite 4.35.5, came out this week, too, introducing full support for Windows 7 and a half dozen bug-fixes. This is not a security update, but if you use DAEMON Tools, you’ll be much happier with the new SPTD support, GUI changes and the optional sidebar gadget (Vista and Win7 only).

Recuva 1.32.444 came out a couple days ago, introducing a U3 portable installer, various GUI and bug fixes and performance modifications. This is not a security update, BUT do you really want to be using a version with known bugs? Yeah, thought so. If you’re including Recuva in your toolset now, you should get this update:
  http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download

CCleaner 2.25.1025 was released as well, incorporating primarily updates dealing with Windows 7, but adding AVG 9 support, better recursion and exclusions in the settings files. This is not a security update. If you’re using CCleaner, you should get this update:

Developer updates:
These are unlikely to be of interest to most people.

TortoiseSVN 1.6.6 was released this week, too. This is not a security update, but it does correct several outstanding bugs. If you use TortoiseSVN, you should update at your convenience.

ILMerge is a new utility by Microsoft for .NET developers. With it you can merge your .NET assemblies into a single binary, suitable for distribution and portability (as long as the .NET runtimes are already installed on the target computer). While “DLL hell” is supposedly a thing of the past, this should help the developers using .NET to ensure that the “more remote” potential of incompatible assemblies can (finally) be completely avoided. This is not a security update.

Web Package Updates
These are likely to be of interest only to web developers.

phpMyAdmin 3.2.3 was released Friday. This is not a security update. If you have phpMyAdmin installed, you should install this update immediately.

That’s all for now folks. Keep it clean out there. 😉
